Album Review: Code Red by Monica

Monica has been putting out records for 20 years. This is her seventh album over that time. This album is a hot mess. In many ways it falls prey to the same problems so many modern R&B albums fall to. Too many collaborations, too many songs. It's 14 tracks long and has no continuity from one song to the next. If I had been the exec overseeing this album I would have made them strip it down to 8 to 10 songs. In fact here would have been my album.

1. Code Red
2. I Know
3. Deep
4. Hustler's Ambition
5. Alone In Your Heart
6. Suga
7. Ocean of Tears
8. Saints & Sinners

Put these 8 songs on and you get what sounds like a real album and not just some odd collection of songs, many of which are junk. Also these songs highlight Monica, except for "Code Red," in a way that many of the other songs don't. Monica is a solid R&B pop singer and that gets lost on a lot of the songs on this album.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give the album 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.
