A Mix Tape: At 18

A few years back now my wife and I made a mix tape for our niece when she turned 18.  It's a back and forth of songs that we were listening to when we were 18.  Not music that came out when we were 18 but music we were listening to.  What's fun about 18, if you went to college, is there is the pre-college music and then the post-college music.  So 18 is a big influence on the music people will listen to going forward.

I'm assuming she never listened to the mix, but who knows, we had fun making it.

At 18
1. The Blue Sky by a-ha
2. Idiot Wind by Bob Dylan
3. End of Night by The Doors
4. I Started Something I Couldn't Finish by The Smiths
5. Plum Dumb by The Dead Milkmen
6. The Hurt by Cat Stevens
7. One Day by The Church
8. Abandoned Love by Bob Dylan
9. Cannons by Siouxsie and the Banshees
10. Oh Very Young by Cat Stevens
11. New Year's Day by U2
12. I Kicked a Boy by The Sundays
13. Something to Do by Depeche Mode
14. Up to Me by Bob Dylan
15. South Central Rain by R.E.M.
16. Little Miss S by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians

    1. I had completely forgotten about this until I was looking through our Rhapsody playlists and saw this one. Of course it was mostly me saying so what song would you like next and her saying I don't care. But in the end I think we came up with a good mix. Obviously she was really into Dylan and Cat Stevens and was much cooler at 18 than I was.

  3. If you don't like Bob Dylan, "Idiot Wind" is pretty much the song you're referring to when you describe him to someone who has never heard him.

I, however, like Bob Dylan's music a great deal.

  4. You could substitute The Doors and "End of Night" into that first paragraph instead of Dylan, and it still works.

You could not substitute The Doors into the second paragraph, however--though I did love The Doors!
