Get Your Gameface On

The Dolphins are hosting the Bengals in the AFC playoffs on Dec. 23, 1973.

This game is probably why we were all still so worn out a couple of days later.

  1. When the time comes, somebody tell my wife that I want this NFL-on-NBC theme played at my funeral.

  2. Ken Anderson was fantastic. Fantastic! But can you imagine how great and how quickly the Bengals might've gotten had Greg Cook, Paul Brown's original plan, not gotten injured?

  3. Wow ... Mike Douglas is singing the national anthem.

  4. "Mercury Morris" is just a fantastic name.

The Dolphins are going to win this game, and it makes me so happy.

  5. Bengals pick up the first down on a third-and-1, on a run by future Bill Walsh 49er Lenvil Eliott. Pretty good drive here. But don't worry about it--Miami wins this game.

  6. I cannot believe that the Bengals have stayed away from these helmets for 35 years.

  7. Horst Muhlmann, who I'm pretty sure is named on an Odd Couple one time, kicks the field goal, and Cincinnati closes to 7-3. (But the Dolphins win this game.)

    1. Yes, of course, Horst Muhlmann was once named in an Odd Couple. How did I even question this fact in 2015?

  8. Curt Gowdy comments on something that has struck me in watching this game: Mercury Morris is bigger than I remember his being.

  9. 14-3. Two 80-yard drives in the first quarter for Miami. This is making me miss the Salisbury Popes of the old NCFA.

  10. One-hundred seventy-two yards in the first quarter for Miami. Cincinnati had the ball once. This is fantastic.

  11. And two plays into the second quarter, the Bengals have to punt!

  12. Al DeRogatis says, in the waning moments of the half, as Cincinnati takes over, "the strategy might be here to get a drive going."

  13. The 12-2 Dolphins have allowed five touchdown passes all season. "How do they do it?" Curt Gowdy asks. "Everybody's in the right place at the right time."

  14. This is a terrific television program.

  15. Well, heck. Neil Craig just intercepted and returned for a touchdown. I'm sorry I said anything nice earlier about his volunteer work in Lincoln Heights.

I do want to remind you, however, that there's nothing to worry about here. The Dolphins do win this game.

  16. Miami gave up a field goal, and then the Dolphins fumbled the kickoff, and then Cincinnati kicked another field goal. It's 21-16 at the half. But you know what happens? Miami wins, 34-16. Then Christmas comes. Then Miami beats the Raiders, 27-10, in the AFC Championship. And then the Dolphins beat the Vikings in Super Bowl VIII, 24-7. So, ... happy ending. Hooray for the Dolphins!
