Album Review: Monument to an Elegy by Smashing Pumpkins

From what I read the Smashing Pumpkins at this point is essentially a Billy Corgan solo project. Truth is that's OK by me as this is maybe my favorite Smashing Pumpkins album. I've never been the biggest fan of the band, but this album is full of solid hook songs that are all reminiscent of the very music that would have influenced Corgan in his youth, like vintage Cars influence on a song like "Anaise."

Fully embracing these pop influences makes for an interesting album. It does not really sound very 2015, but it does remind one of why the early 90's saw the death of alternative as it and mainstream blended into one, and that's a good thing.

This album is short at nine tracks and that's just fine by me as well as there isn't a wasted note on this album.

The biggest problem with the album is that there isn't anything that is really going to be drawing me back to it.  I found it fun to have on in the background while I worked, and you could put it on while you clean the house but once it drops off my playlist I don't really see myself coming back to it again.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.
