  2. Congratulations, Rory McIlroy, who becomes just the third golfer ever to have won three major tournaments by age 25 or younger. The other two were Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, so this is quite an accomplishment, and it's exciting as a golf fan to think that we might be in the early days of our sport's next historically great career.

McIlroy was pushed Saturday and today. Rickie Fowler drew even at one point on the back nine yesterday; Sergio Garcia got within two strokes right after the turn today. And both times, Rors thwarted the challenge. It's hard to make golf look beautifully violent in the way that sports fans and writers used to talk about a Muhammad Ali boxing match being, but McIlroy's two-eagles-in-the-last-three-holes flourish Saturday came pretty darned close.

Too, it was good to see that Fowler and Garcia--once neutralized by McIlroy--didn't disappear. I became a bona-fide Rickie Fowler fan this weekend. After making his strong move Saturday (and then being outsprinted to the finish of the third round), I was afraid McIlroy's fellow 25-year-old might drift far off the pace, playing with Rory today. Not so. Fowler shot 5-under 67, his fourth consecutive sub-70 round of the British Open, for his third straight top-five finish in a major. He and Garcia ended up T2, two back of the champ.

This was probably my favorite major tournament since Tiger Woods last won. McIlroy was outstanding, and Fowler and Sergio were very good. Old, Reliable Jim Furyk turned in his typically solid, fourth-place showing. Tom Watson and Phil Mickelson both shot 4-under today. And Tiger, at least, played--and played very well for 16 holes Thursday.

Also, the British Open is just a fantastic tournament to watch. By the end of four days watching that thing, you really feel like you've been somewhere. In addition to the Internet, TV is also amazing.

After 72 holes of the 143rd British Open:
