  1. In the top of the 4th, Pepperdine leads Texas Christian 3-1.

  2. Texas Christian scored two runs in the top of the 9th to come from behind and beat Pepperdine 6-5. So the Horned Frogs will join Texas Tech and the University of Texas in the College World Series.

  3. In the bottom of the 5th, UVA leads Maryland 6-0.

  4. In the top of the 5th in Lafayette, Ole Miss and La-Lafayette are tied at 3.

  5. In the top of the 5th, Ole Miss has runners on 1st and 3d with two out. La-Laf is changing pitchers.

  6. According to Google Maps, it is 389 miles from Oxford, Mississippi to Lafayette, Louisiana. You take I-55 out of Oxford and drive all the way through Mississippi and into Louisiana. Then you take I-10 out into Lafayette. It's like going to Baton Rouge, except you have to keep going west for another 56 miles.

  7. The La-Laf relief pitcher through one pitch and hit the batter. So now the bases are loaded with two out, and La-Laf is changing pitchers again.

    ReplyDelete
  8. La-Laf is wearing these ridiculous red, blue, and gray camouflage jerseys that say LOUISIANA on the front.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Oh, my! La-Laf allows a passed ball and Ole Miss takes a 4-3 lead.

Then the batter is walked, so the bases are loaded again.

  10. The next batter flies out to deep left and the inning is over. Ole Miss leads 4-3 after 4 1/2 innings.

  11. For the record, I think La-Laf should still be called Southwestern Louisiana, which was its name until 1999.

According to Wikipedia, in 1984 Southwestern Louisiana tried to change its name to the University of Louisiana. This lasted only a month until it was blocked by the legislature.

I wonder if the folks at Murray State have ever considered renaming themselves as "Kentucky Tech."

  12. Ole Miss has much better uniforms: blue shirts with "Rebels" in red cursive script across the front, white pants with blue pinstripes, and a blue cap with a red "M."

  13. La-Laf gets a single but nothing else in the bottom of the 5th. After 5 innings, Ole Miss leads 4-3. The Rebels haven't been to the College World Series since 1972.

  14. Louisiana-Lafayette hasn't been to the CWS since 2000.

  15. In the top of the 6th, Ole Miss gets a two-out walk and a double down the left field line to take a 5-3 lead.

  16. I wonder how the LSU fans feel about this game. If it were me, and UK had been knocked out of the NCAA basketball tournament, and now WKU was playing Tennessee with a chance to advance, I would definitely root for Western. In fact, I think I would root for Western in that situation against any SEC school with the exception of Vandy.

  17. Of course, the LSU fans may think of La-Laf as more like Louisville. Personally, I would root for every SEC team -- including Tennessee -- over Louisville.

  18. With two outs in the bottom of the 6th, La-Laf has put runners on 1st and 2d thanks to an error and a walk. There are two outs, but Ole Miss isn't taking any chances; they are bringing in a new pitcher.

  19. It appeared that the La-Laf batter had crushed a three-run homer to right, but the ball died in the Louisiana air, and was caught just short of the wall.

After 6, Ole Miss leads 5-3.

Meanwhile, in Charlottesville UVA leads Maryland 6-2. The Hoos are coming up to bat in the bottom of the 8th.

  20. Ole Miss goes down 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th. La-Laf will be sending up its 3, 4, and 5 hitters in the bottom of the 7th.

  21. With one out in the bottom of the 7th, the La-Laf batter hits a hard grounder to the mound. The pitcher bobbles the ball for one error, and then picks it up and throws it away for another error. Two errors on one play, and the Ragin' Cajuns have a runner on second.

  22. La-Laf gets a walk to put runners on first and second. The next batter flies out to center -- but the next batter lashes a shot down the third base line. The first runner scores. The second runner is gunned down at the plate! The Ragin' Cajuns rage about the call, but it looked good to me.

That ends the inning. After 7, here's where we stand:

Ole Miss: 5 runs, 6 hits, 4 errors
    La-Lafayette: 4 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors

    ReplyDelete
  23. In the top of the 8th, Ole Miss sends up the bottom of the order.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ole Miss gets a leadoff walk to open the 8th, so the Ragin' Cajuns are going to their fifth pitcher of the game.

  25. This is wild. La-Laf is bringing in their center fielder, Seth Harrison, to pitch. This means that they are giving up their designated hitter -- their DH has now entered the game to play third, their third baseman has moved to left, and their left fielder has moved to center.

    ReplyDelete
  26. According to the Ole Miss radio announcers, Seth Harrison has only pitched three innings all year. He immediately walks the first batter he faces. That is La-Laf's sixth walk of the game.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The next Ole Miss batter almost hits into a double play, but he beats it out. So the Rebels now have men on first and third with one out.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Meanwhile, UVA closes out Maryland with style, beating the Terps 11-2 to win their spot in the CWS. Ole Miss and La-Laf are now battling for the last remaining slot.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ole Miss gets a sacrifice fly to left, and the score is now 6-4 to the Rebs.

The next batter grounds out, and that's the end of the inning.

  30. OK, so here's where things stand for the College World Series. (National seeds in parentheses):

Bracket One: UC-Irvine, Texas, Louisville, Vanderbilt
Bracket Two: Texas Tech, (7) Texas Christian, (3) Virginia

Either Ole Miss or (6) Louisiana-Lafayette will get the last spot in Bracket Two.

    ReplyDelete
  31. In the bottom of the 8th, La-Lafayette gets a two-out single but nothing else. Here's where we are with one inning left:

    Mississippi: 6 runs, 6 hits, 4 errors
    La-Lafayette: 4 runs, 10 hits, 0 errors

  32. ESPN just pointed out that since 2005, Ole Miss has gone 0-4 in Super Regional playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Ole Miss opens the 9th inning with a walk and a single, and the Rebels have runners at the corners with no one out. La-Laf is going to change pitchers again.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Ben Carter is the new relief pitcher, and he immediately walks the first batter he faces to load the bases. That is the 7th walk of the day from La-Lafayette. They've also hit three batters.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ole Miss sends up Holt Perdzock to pinch hit. He works the count to 3-2, and then whacks a double to right field. The right fielder can't pick up the ball cleanly -- that's an error, and Perdzock scoots to third. All the runners score. Ole Miss leads 9-4, and shouts of "Hoddy Toddy" are hurt from the small but enthusiastic group of Rebel fans who are now surrounded by thousands of silent Cajuns.

    ReplyDelete
  36. La-Lafayette makes another pitching change, and Ole Miss hits a sacrifice fly to make the score 10-4. Now La-Lafayette is changing pitchers again.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The Rebels are finally retired, and they go into the bottom of the 9th with a 10-4 lead.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Josh Laxar, the Rebel closer who actually entered this game in the sixth inning, retires the Ragin' Cajuns 1-2-3 and the game is over. Ole Miss wins 10-4, and they are going to the College World Series for the first time since 1972.

    ReplyDelete
  39. The SEC doesn't often have to rely on Vandy and Ole Miss to protect its pride, but the Commodores and Rebels came through this year.

    ReplyDelete
  40. But spare a thought for Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns won 58 games this year, and never lost two games in a row -- until they lost their last two games of the year.
