Album Review: Black Panties by R. Kelly

Marvin Gaye produced two historically important albums. The first came out in in 1971, What's Going On, and is important because it was the first time a mainstream R&B artist got to write songs about social and political issues. This opened the door for other mainstream R&B artists and so changed the landscape of R&B.

His other historically important album came out in 1973, Let's Get It On. This was the first time a mainstream R&B artist took on sensuality in a very blunt manner and similar to What's Going On opened the door for future mainstream R&B artists to do the same. All this leads us to the latest album from R. Kelly which is his Let's Get It On. I am a big R. Kelly fan, I think he's the best R&B artist going, but this album is so far over the top for me that I can't listen to it, even in private without blushing. It is not a rated R take on sensuality, but a rated X take on it and for me this makes the album a throw away. I think that's a shame coming from one of the best artists going today.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 0 out of 5 stars for Don't Like.
