Album Review: Desire Lines by Camera Obscura

In 1986 MTV premiered a new show called 120 Minutes. That show highlighted what was called alternative music and back in 1986 that consisted of anything in the rock genre that did not receive mainstream airplay or was on a major label. That included all kinds of music from The Cure, to New Order, to INXS.

The idea of alternative is now a dead concept.  Many of the alternative bands ended up finding mainstream success, then with the boom of the internet and growing access to all music the idea of alternative no longer really fit. A boy in Paducah today has the same access to music as a boy in New York City. That wasn't the case back in 1986.

All this is being said to say that if you went back to 1990 and sat down with yourself to watch 120 minutes you could use your science and technology to throw on a song from this new Camera Obscura album and no one would think anything out of the ordinary. It has the feel and tone of so much of that music from the late 80's but it still feels very 2013.

This is a nice album though nothing to run out and buy. Good for background music while having a game night with friends.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. There was an episode of 120 Minutes that featured two (2!) videos from the Government Cheese. At that point, it felt to me like it was inevitable that they were going to be the biggest band in the world.

You're totally right about this song.
