College Baseball Update

Last night, the best-two-out-of-three final of the College World Series got underway, and UCLA cruised to a relatively easy 3-1 victory over Mississippi State.  With a win tonight, the Bruins can capture their first ever NCAA Baseball Championship.

  1. In each of the last three years, the final has ended with a two-game sweep.

  2. On the other hand, Mississippi State is the road team for tonight's game, and road teams are 10-3 at the CWS.

  3. UCLA takes a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. The Bruins scored with a hit batsman, a bunt, a throwing error by the MSU pitcher fielding the bunt, and a sacrifice fly.

That's pretty much how UCLA has won all year, and it's tailor-made for the new stadium in Omaha, where home runs are very difficult to come by.

  4. UCLA does it again. In the bottom of the 3d, the Bruins get a walk, a hit-and-run that puts runners on first and third, and a sacrifice bunt to take a 2-0 lead. Then a two-out double drives in another run to put the Uclan up 3-0.

UCLA is 40-5 when they score 3 or more runs.

  5. That two-out double was actually a single and an error by the MSU right fielder. So far, MSU has made three errors in three innings.

  6. In the top of the 4th, MSU has men on first and second with one out thanks to a single and an error. But they keep trying to hammer the ball, and the ball just does not carry at this new stadium. So MSU's next two batters fly out to left, and that's it.

UCLA still leads 3-0. I think it's just a matter of time now. I'm not sure MSU could score three runs if they had 18 more innings.

  7. UCLA is only batting .247 as a team, so they really are the Hitless Wonders of college baseball.

  8. UCLA strikes again. Another hit batsman, another sacrifice bunt, and a bouncing single up the middle. Now the score is 4-0. The Bruins have four singles and four runs.

  9. OK, that's it for tonight. I hope MSU comes back, but I'm pretty sure this game is over.
