College Baseball Update

We're a little late getting to this, but here is Baseball America's Top 25 at the end of the regular season.  North Carolina fell from 3d to 6th after losing a season-ending series to UVA.  Vandy and LSU stayed on top with series wins over Alabama and Ole Miss respectively.  Interestingly, Vandy and LSU have not played each other all year:

1.  Vanderbilt:  48-7

We are currently in the midst of conference tournaments, which will go through this weekend.  The participants and seeds for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Memorial Day.

  1. Here were the final standings in the Sun Belt (conference games only):

    Troy 20-10
    S. Alabama: 20-10
    La-Lafayette: 19-11
    Fla. Atlantic: 19-11

    La-Monroe: 7-23

  2. Western has been eliminated from the Sun Belt Tournament. The Hilltoppers lost to Florida Atlantic 5-4, and then lost to Arkansas State by 10-4. So their season is over.

  3. Here were the final standings in the OVC (conference games only):

    Tenn. Tech: 24-6
    Austin Peay: 22-7
    Belmont: 22-8
    Jacksonville St: 22-8

    SE Missouri: 13-17
    E. Illinois: 11-17
    SIU-Edwardsville: 10-20
    Morehead St: 10-20
    Murray St: 9-21
    UT-Martin: 4-26

Morehead and Murray did not qualify for the OVC Tournament, so their seasons are over.

  4. Eastern won its first game in the OVC Tournament, beating Jacksonville State 11-4. The Colonels lost their next game, as they suffered a 13-4 defeat to Austin Peay. Eastern's next game is today at 3 PM Central, against either Belmont or SEMO. The Colonels will have to win in order to survive.

  5. Here were the final standings in the SEC (conference games only):

    Vanderbilt: 26-3
    S. Carolina: 17-12
    Florida: 14-16
    Kentucky: 11-19
    Missouri: 10-20
    Tennessee: 9-19
    Georgia: 7-20

    LSU: 23-7
    Arkansas: 18-11
    Mississippi St: 16-14
    Ole Miss: 15-15
    Alabama: 14-15
    Texas A & M: 13-16
    Auburn: 13-17

  6. Here's what has happened in the SEC Tournament, being held in Hoover, Alabama.

    PRELIMINARY ROUND (Single-elimination):
Mississippi 4, Kentucky 1 (Kentucky eliminated)
Alabama 6, Auburn 3 (Auburn eliminated)
    Texas A & M 6, Florida 3 (Florida eliminated)
Mississippi St 2, Missouri 1 (17 innings) (Mo. eliminated)

    Arkansas 2, Mississippi 1 (10 innings)
    LSU 3, Alabama 0
    Texas A & M 5, Vanderbilt 0
    Mississippi St. 5, S. Carolina 3
    Alabama 7, Mississippi 5 (10 innings)(Miss. eliminated)
    Vanderbilt 4, S. Carolina 3 (10 innings) (S. Caro. eliminated)
    Arkansas 4, LSU 1
    Mississippi St. 6, Texas A & M 4

So Arkansas and Mississippi State have qualified for the semi-finals, which will be played as single-elimination games on Saturday.

Today, LSU will play Alabama, with the winner to meet Arkansas in one semi-final. Then Vandy will play A & M, with the winner to meet Mississippi State in the other semi-final.

The final will take place on Sunday at 2:30 Central.

  7. Kentucky, which was ranked in the top 15 a few months ago, lost seven of their last nine games, including a loss to Ole Miss in the SEC tournament. The Cats' overall record is 30-25, and they probably will not be invited to the NCAA Tournament.

  8. William & Mary, the number-two seed in the Colonial Athletic Association, scored four runs with two out in the botto of the 9th to beat James Madison 20-19 in its first tournament game. Later today, the Tribe will play Towson State.

  9. William & Mary lost to Towson State 20-13.

Tomorrow, at noon Central, W & M will take on Northeastern in an elimination game.

  10. In the SEC Tournament, LSU beat Alabama 3-2 to go into tomorrow's single-elimination semi-final against Arkansas. Vandy beat A & M 3-0 to qualify for the other single-elimination semi-final against Mississippi State.

  11. At the OVC Tournament, Eastern Kentucky beat SEMO 12-9 in an elimination game. Tomorrow the Colonels face another elimination game against Tennessee Tech, which lost 6-2 to Austin Peay today. The EKU/Tech game will start at noon Central in Jackson, Tennessee.

  12. In the first SEC semi-final, Arkansas leads LSU 1-0 after four innings.

  13. They just reported that the top 5 teams in NCAA Baseball attendance are all from the SEC. LSU is number one; the Tigers average more than 10,000 people per game.

  14. LSU holds Arkansas to only one hit, and the Tigers advance to the SEC championship game with a 3-1 win over the Razorbacks.

  15. In the CAA Tournament, William & Mary pounds Northeastern 12-4. The CAA is now down to Towson and W & M. Since the Tribe have already lost once, they have to beat Towson twice to win the title. Towson can prevail if they win once.

  16. In the OVC, Eastern Kentucky knocks off Tennessee Tech 6-4. So the Colonels now have to beat Austin Peay twice to win the title.
