New York v. Baltimore

For the second night in a row, the Yankees and the Orioles are going to extra innings.  They're all tied at 1 in the Big Ballpark in the Bronx.

  1. The games today have been amazing. The Giants beat Cincy 6-4 on a game that wasn't decided until the final at bat. The Nats staved off elimination with a 2-1 victory that was decided by a 9th-inning home run. And now the Orioles and Yankees are in extra innings for the second night in a row.

    MORE LIFE! MORE BASEBALL!

  2. This is bizarre. In the top of the 12th, Baltimore catcher Matt Wieters hit a broken-bat single to left. The barrel of the bat went flying out to the mound and hit Yankee pitcher Joba Chamberlain on the elbow. Chamberlain had to leave the game. So the Yanks are relying on David Phelps -- their sixth pitcher of the night.

  3. Phelps comes in, warms up, and then retires the side with two fly outs and a strikeout. We're going to the bottom of the 12th still tied at 1.

  4. Jeter gets a two-out single in the bottom of the 12th, but it's all for naught. We're still tied at 1, and headed to the 13th.

  5. I can see why the Orioles went 16-3 in extra innings games -- and 30-10 in one-run games -- this year. Their bullpen is really, really good.

  6. The Orioles are 7-0 in games that went 13 innings or more this year. And sure enough, Matt Machado -- Baltimore's number 9 hitter -- leads off the 13th with a double. And then Machado moves to third on a groundout by Nate McLouth.

  7. So it's up to J.J. Hardy:

    Ball
    Ball
    Strike
    Foul

And then Hardy crashes a double to left-center field. The Orioles lead 2-1.

  8. By the way, Baltimore's bullpen has thrown 6 1/3 innings so far in this game. They have given up no runs, only 4 hits, and only 1 walk. They also have 5 strikeouts.

    That's a good bullpen.

  9. The Yankees get out of the inning with no more damage, but if they can't score in the bottom of the 13th, this series is going to a game 5.

Fangraphs gives Baltimore an 80 percent chance of victory.

  10. Teixeira, who is just terrible in the playoffs, strikes out.

  11. Cano flies out to left on the first pitch.

  12. Eric Chavez comes in to pinch-hit for A-Rod.

  13. Chavez lines out to third. So the Yankees, who usually lose in the ALDS, have been forced into a Game 5. There will be great gloom among Yankee fans tomorrow, because they have seen this movie over and over and over -- their guys get to the playoffs, and just stop hitting.

  14. On the other hand, it was a huge day for folks who use the BWI airport, as both the Nats and the O's pulled off stupendous wins against more storied foes.
