Album Review: Stage Whisper by Charlotte Gainsbourg

With her second album, IRM, Gainsbourg found a sound and an audience.  That was a sound that was developed by her and Beck in a studio.  From those studio sessions now comes another eight previously unreleased songs paired up on this album with 11 live tracks.

Normally I would say run away from previously unreleased stuff, especially for an artist who essentially has no back catalog, but these songs make a solid collection.  Whatever was going on with her and Beck in the studios back in 2009, it worked well enough to essentially create two albums worth of music.

I would normally also stay away from live stuff, and that stands here.  To my mind this music doesn't translate that well to a live environment and though I enjoyed the eight new tracks, I found myself just waiting for the live stuff to come to an end.

So I would say just think of this as an EP and stick to the eight tracks of unreleased material and you'll be happy.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 2 out of 5 stars for Not Bad.

  1. those scenes of her running down the ramp of the parking garage with the car in pursuit are harrowing.
