U.S. Women's Open, Day 1

We are at the Broadmoor (East Course) in Colorado Springs. Here are the last ten winners of this tournament:

2010: Paula Creamer
2009: Eun-Hee Ji (KOR)
2008: Inbee Park (KOR)
2007: Cristie Kerr
2006: Annika Sorenstam (SWE)
2005: Birdie Kim (KOR)
2004: Meg Mallon
2003: Hilary Lunke
2002: Julie Inkster
2001: Karrie Webb (AUS)

The overwhelming favorite this year, of course, is Yani Tseng of Taiwan, who has won two out of the last three majors, and who just won the LPGA Championship last month by 10 shots.

If anything of interest happens, I'll mention it in the comments.

  1. Play stopped early in the afternoon due to rain, and as of 3:12 PM MDT, play was suspended for the day. A lot of the big-name players, including Paula Creamer and Yani Tseng, have yet to tee off. Here are the top 5 for now:

    T1. C. Kerr: -2 (15 holes)
    T1. Miss A. Anderson (a): -2 (12)
    T3. I. Park (KOR): -1 (17)
    T3. A. Miyazato (JPN): -1 (15)
    T3. S. Cavalleri (ITA): -1 (1)

  2. Why does A. Anderson get a "Miss"?

  3. Because she is an amateur.

  4. Ah, of course--very good. Speaking of amateurs, a Princeton miss is 4-over.

  5. That's a good catch. I should have mentioned Miss Emma Talley already. She's currently tied for 39th place, although about half the field has yet to tee off. I really hope she makes the cut.
