One and done: Boys' round of 128*

First, here are an addendum and look back at The Heath Post's exclusive coverage from Crofton of last night's Second Region quarterfinals in Hopkinsville.

Here's a pharmacist working late.

And here are some guys playing pool.

This CD (produced in Nortonville) was on sale for $12 at the Chef's Classic Pizza counter.

Crofton's downtown straddles railroad tracks just to the east of U.S. 41. Chef's sits between the two, facing the tracks, and here's a photo from the inside looking out.

I'd already eaten a BK Veggie and large fries; otherwise, I might've ordered a double helping each of the white beans and fried okra.

Nonetheless, on the drive home, I ended up eating a lot of my daughter's leftovers.

Actually, the following picture is from summer 2006, but it still applies.

And this one's from the wedding in 1991.

And now here's a look ahead to tonight's games, which includes one (*) round-of-64 matchup, a semifinal in the Third Region:

First Region, at Murray State--Marshall County vs. Carlisle County and Graves County vs. Heath

Second Region, at Hopkinsville--Madisonville-North Hopkins vs. Lyon County and University Heights vs. Union County

  1. Love the pictures. I have never seen a picture of western Kentucky that I didn't find interesting.

Jason Frakes will be stuck in Louisville today covering the girls' tournament. But he reports that tonight's big games include the following:

Scott Co. v. Lex. Catholic (11th). Probably no other school in the state is slammed on message boards for cheating as much as these two. Folks in the Lexington area are convinced that Toyota helps Scott Co. get players, and that Lex. Catholic cheats in all sorts of ways. So it will be fun to see them play each other to see who gets to wear the black hat the rest of the way.

Warren Central v. Russellville (4th). Frakes says that Russellville is "always pesky."

    Muhlenberg Co. v. Owensboro (3d)
    N. Oldham v. Walton-Verona (8th)
    Dixie Heights v. Highlands (9th)
    Holmes v. Boone Co. (9th)
Knott Co. Cent. v. Hazard (14th)
    Betsy Layne v. Belfry (15th)

  2. When I lived in Lexington it was always fun to hear all of that chatter up there.

    ReplyDelete
  3. For what it's worth, I do agree that Russellville is "always pesky."

    ReplyDelete
  4. Oh, completely. As soon as I read what you had said Jason Frakes had written about Russellville, I thought to myself, "Well, that's true."

    ReplyDelete
  5. Poor old Jason Frakes is wasting his time. He's stuck over in Louisville watching Louisville Mercy roll through the 7th region -- they're up 49-35 on J-Town after three quarters -- when he could be on his way to Richmond for the Scott Co./Lex. Catholic game.

Back in the old days, Dave Kindred would have done a great column about Scott Co. and Lex. Catholic. He would have found a bunch of folks around Lexington who hate both schools, and gotten a bunch of quotes about what awful cheaters they are. Then he would have profiled both schools in a more objective light, showing how the allegations made against them are unfair, and about how we should celebrate successful teams instead of always condemning them. I wouldn't have agreed with him, but it would have been great to read.

I don't blame Jason Frakes; I'm sure he didn't choose to be stuck at Bellarmine all afternoon. But it really doesn't strike me as the best use of his time.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Meanwhile, Jason Frakes is watching the Manual girls pound the Ballard girls 36-15 at halftime.

  7. I should say, for the record, that I would be extraordinarily happy if Heath could knock off Graves Co. tonight. But years of following Heath have left me quite pessimistic about our prospects.

    ReplyDelete
  8. The 10th Region is on the air with Pendleton County and Montgomery County tied at 5 midway through the first quarter in Maysville, and, to get you ready for the Mason County-Campbell County nightcap, here's a very intriguing blog that WFTM's Danny Weddle did last year during Mason's 50th season.

  9. The Herald-Leader's Mike Fields will be covering tonight's 11th Region doubleheader.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Because computers are stupid (or I am), I can't seem to get the link to work on my Apple, but the terrific FroggylandSports.com team has the First Region games.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Mike Fields reports that Woodford Co. (19-9) leads Madison Southern (13-15) by the score of 23-21 at the half.

    ReplyDelete
  12. By the way, here are the last ten winners of the 11th Region. You will quickly see why the Scott Co./Lex. Cath game is such a big deal:

    2010: Scott Co.
    2009: Lex. Catholic
    2008: Lex. Catholic
    2007: Scott Co. (STATE CHAMPS)
    2006: Madison Cent.
    2005: Lex. Henry Clay
    2004: Lex. Lafayette
    2003: Lex. Henry Clay
    2002: Lex. Catholic (STATE CHAMPS)
    2001: Lex. Lafayette (STATE CHAMPS)

Scott Co. was in the 8th region until a few years ago, when they were shifted to the 11th.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I did get the Froggyland link to work. I am reminded of a March long ago -- this would have been around 1982 or 1983 -- when Matthew listened to almost every game of the 3d District tournament. This was back in the days when there were about 7 schools in Graves Co., and they all competed for the 3d District title.

    ReplyDelete
  14. The Froggyland guys say that Marshall Co. has "spurtability," and the Marshals have spurted to a 14-7 lead over Carlisle late in the 1st quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Here are the last ten winners of our beloved 1st Region. Amazingly, you will see that the Marshals are not on this list; Marshall Co. hasn't been to the state tournament since 1995.

    2010: Paducah Tilghman
    2009: Graves Co.
    2008: Paducah Tilghman
    2007: Paducah Tilghman
    2006: Graves Co.
    2005: Lone Oak
    2004: Carlisle Co.
    2003: Calloway Co.
2002: Paducah Tilghaman (lost in finals)
    2001: Carlisle Co.

The First Region, of course, has not won the state title since 1959, with North Marshall took the crown. In fact, I think Heath is the only school in the First Region that (1) has won the state title and (2) still exists.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I keep losing Froggyland myself, so I will have to move on. It's just as well, because I would be too nervous to follow the Heath-Graves game.

    ReplyDelete
  17. With the crashing of Froggyland, I have switched to the 10th region. Montgomery Co. leads Pendleton Co. 35-31 with 5:51 left in the 3d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Here are the last 10 winners of the 10th region, which has been dominated by the folks from Maysville:

    2010: Mason Co.
    2009: Mason Co.
    2008: Mason Co. (STATE CHAMPS)
    2007: George Rogers Clark
    2006: Mason Co.
    2005: Pendleton Co.
    2004: Mason Co. (state finalist)
    2003: Mason Co. (STATE CHAMPS)
    2002: Mason Co.
    2001: Campbell Co.

  19. In the 11th Region, Woodford Co. leads Madison Southern 39-35 at the end of the 3d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Some UK fans were hoping that South Carolina would knock off the Vols tonight. But the Vols are at their best when they are in trouble. With 7:25 left in the first half, UT leads 27-15.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Pendleton has put on a big run, and they now lead Montgomery Co. 48-43 at the end of the 3d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Woodford Co. leads Madison Southern 45-35 with 5:25 left in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Pendleton Co. leads 62-57 with 3:12 left in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Madison Southern has roared back; Woodford's lead is only 60-57 with 57 seconds to go.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Pendleton leads 63-60 with 2:31 left.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I was wrong before; Woodford's lead was 50-47 with 57 seconds left.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Woodford holds on to defeat Madison Southern 56-50.

Mike Fields reports that this is Woodford Co.'s first region victory in five years.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Pendleton and Montgomery are tied at 63 with one minute to go.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Montgomery Co. misses and Pendleton will have the ball with 8 seconds to go. Still tied at 63. Time out.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1st Region: WPSD reports that Marshall leads Carlisle 33-21 at the half.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Montgomery and Pendleton are going to overtime tied at 63.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Pendleton leads 70-66 with 1:15 left. Montgomery ball.

    ReplyDelete
  33. With 1 minute to go, Montgomery misses two FTs. Pendleton now going to the line with a 70-66 lead.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pendleton misses both FTs! Montgomery gets the rebound and now they are heading to the line.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Montgomery makes both FTs; now it's 70-68 with 44 seconds left.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Pendleton makes 1 of 2 FTs; they lead 71-68 with 34 seconds left in OT.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Montgomery scores to make it 71-70 with 22 seconds to go. Time out. Pendleton needs to find someone who can shoot FTs.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Pendleton makes 1 of 2 FTs; they lead 72-70.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Montgomery turnover! They drop the ball out of bounds with 4.4 seconds to go.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Meanwhile, Mike Fields reports that Lex Cath has jumped out to a 14-4 lead with 3:30 left in the 1st quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Pendleton finally makes both FTs; they lead 74-70 with 3.6 seconds left.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Pendleton wins, 74-70 in OT. They advance to the regional semi-finals.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Now I've switched over to WMJR radio in Lexington -- 1380 AM. This is a Catholic station ("Change Your Station / Change Your Life") and they are carrying the Lex Cath-Scott Co. game.

LexCath leads 27-14 with 6:09 left in the 2d quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Mike Fields reports that Scott Co. is having trouble with LexCath's pressure.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Meanwhile, South Carolina has trimmed UT's lead. The Vols are up 55-49 with 9:12 to go in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  46. WPSD reports that Marshall has beaten Carlisle 70-47.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Scott Co. fights back somewhat in the 2d quarter. At halftime, LexCath leads 36-28.

    ReplyDelete
  48. UT has pulled back out, and now lead Carolina 65-58 with 4:20 to go.

A few years ago, Darrin Horn and Western Kentucky went to the Sweet 16 of the NCAAs. I don't think either of them will be there this year.

    ReplyDelete
  49. WMJR, by the way, is a hard-core Catholic station. Every commercial during the half-time break has turned on promoting Catholicism.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Now WMJR is having a "Chesterton Minute." This is great!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Carolina made one more run, but UT holds on for a 73-69 victory.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Catholic leads 53-43 at the end of the 4th quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Catholic, which has had a surprisingly easy time of it tonight, leads 64-54 with 2:13 left in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Scott Co. scores two quick baskets, and the score is now 64-58 with a minute and a half to go.

    ReplyDelete
  55. WPSD reports that Graves leads Heath 20-15 at the half.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Catholic makes their free throws, and they cruise to a 70-60 win. Toyota High is out!

    ReplyDelete
  57. WPSD reports that Graves leads Heath 35-27 after 3 quarters.

    ReplyDelete
  58. In the 2d region, Madisonville-N. Hopkins holds off Lyon Co. 72-67 in double overtime.

In the 4th region, Warren Central doesn't have too much trouble with pesky Russellville. The Dragons roll, 75-59.

    ReplyDelete
  59. TWITTER BOMB: Heath down eight through three in the First, says WPSD; Russellville not pesky enough against Warren Central in the Fourth, says The Daily News of Bowling Green, and Mayor Cox says Madisonville-North Hopkins prevailed against Lyon County in the Second.

    ReplyDelete
  60. "KCongo24" tweets that Scott County fans and Catholic fans are fighting in the parking lot!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Third Region: Union County leading University Heights at the half, per WMSK of Morganfield/Sturgis.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Actually, that Union Co. game is in the 2d Region. That would be a huge deal if the Braves could knock off U-Heights down in Hoptown.

    ReplyDelete
  63. In fact, here are your last 10 winners of the 2d Region, which has been pretty much dominated by the Hoptown crew:

    2010: Christian Co.
    2009: Christian Co.
    2008: University Heights
    2007: Christian Co.
    2006: Christian Co.
    2005: University Heights
    2004: University Heights
    2003: Hopkinsville
    2002: Christian Co.
    2001: Madisonville-N. Hopkins

The last team from the 2d Region to go all the way was University Heights, in 1992. That is the only Kentucky state tournament I have ever seen in person.

    ReplyDelete
  64. WPSD reports that Graves has beaten Heath 48-36. For what I believe is the 80th season in a row, the Pirates will not be going to the state tournament.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Here's a bunch of scores from across the state:

    1st Region:
    Marshall Co. 70, Carlisle 47
    Graves Co. 48, Heath 36

    2d Region:
    Madisonville-N. Hopkins 72, Lyon Co. 67 (2 OT)

    3d Region:
    Muhlenberg Co. 84, Owensboro 66

    4th Region:
    Warren Cent. 75, Russellville 59

    5th Region:
    Bethlehem 56, Taylor Co. 49
    E-Town 69, Caverna 59

    8th Region:
    N. Oldham 55, Walton-Verona 54
Spencer Co. 50, Gallatin Co. 46

    9th Region:

    Dixie Heights 55, Highlands 45

    10th Region:
Pendleton Co. 74, Montgomery Co. 70 (OT)

    11th Region:
Lex. Catholic 70, Scott Co. 60
Woodford Co. 56, Madison Southern 50

    12th Region:
    Pulaski Co. 55, E. Jessamine 53
    Wayne Co. 60, Danville 50

    13th Region:
Clay Co. 62, Harlan Co. 61
    Corbin 59, Barbourville 43

    14th Region:
Knott Co. Cent. 53, Hazard 46

    15th Region:
    Betsy Layne 59, Belfry 30
    Pikeville 66, Sheldon Clark 50

    ReplyDelete
  66. So I finally tuned in WMSK (101.3) to see how Union Co. is doing. It turns out they are leading 47-46 with 17 seconds to go. Union has the ball and we're in a timeout.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Union misses two free throws. U-Heights is fouled with 9.4 seconds to go.

    ReplyDelete
  68. U-Heights misses the FT and knocks the rebound out of bounds! Union in-bounds and is fouled with 8 seconds to go.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Union Co. makes the first FT. They lead 48-46.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Union Co. makes the second FT. They lead 49-46 with 7.3 seconds to go. U-Heights has the ball and they call time.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Union Co. was 13-13 this year, while U-Heights was 18-8.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Union Co. knocks the ball out of bounds with 4.4 seconds to go.

    ReplyDelete
  73. U-Heights shoots a 3 and misses! The Union Co. Braves have won, 49-46!!! They move on to play Madisonville-N. Hopkins in the semi-finals!

    ReplyDelete
  74. And that's all from GoHeath for tonight. What a great evening of basketball.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Congratulations, Union County. That's a great win. And thanks for the reports, GoHeath!
