Oh, Kentucky

The people, yes. (Outstanding Bowling Green Daily News feature by Eliott Pratt here.)

I confess that I knew next to zero about any of the inductees-as-of-tomorrow to the Kentucky Writers Hall of Fame: John Fox Jr. (1862-1919) of Stony Point and finally Paris, bell hooks of Hopkinsville and currently Berea College, Annie Fellows Johnston (1863-1931) eventually of Pewee Valley and Walter Tevis (1928-1984) periodically of Madison County, Carlisle, Hawesville, Irvine, Science Hill, etc.

Thank you for your service, Cpl. (Ret.) Bradford of Winchester, and enjoy your trip to Washington.

The Kochs, meanwhile, had Gov. Bevin out to Palm Springs this past weekend.

Oh, Kentucky

Checking in on the playing and player hating in Louisville, ...

... Frankfort (via Fort Knox, New Hampshire and Denver), ...

... Harlan ...

... and New York (via New York, Morehouse and Versailles) ...

The Louisville suburbs per Niche.com:

1. Anchorage
2. Indian Hills
3. Hurstbourne Acres
4. Hurstbourne
5. Crestwood
6. Windy Hills
7. Barbourmeade
8. Prospect
9. Pewee Valley
10. Beechwood Village

Some of the Handmade in Hindman classes are full, but you can still get in on the instrument making, spoon carving and iron casting.

If you're on the market for another of the Greatest Generation's institutions to worry about the future of, you might enjoy WKDZ's report on first two nights of the Hopkinsville Rotarian Auction.

Oh, Kentucky

Slaughters last week said goodbye, presumably forever, to its school after 95 years of operation. It hadn't been a high school since 1964. The blue-and-gold Panthers never won a regional basketball championship.

"Kentucky sometimes gets a bad rap in the discussion of best sections on the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail."

My Apology to Mitch Barnhart

I was very critical of Mitch Barnhart, the UK athletic director, back in the bad old days of Tubby Smith and Billy Gillispie. And I still think most of the credit for hiring John Calipari should go to the UK fans who insisted upon it. But look at what UK has done this year:

1. The football team finally beat Tennessee.

2. The rifle team finished number 2 in the country

3. The women's basketball team won the SEC and went to the Elite 8.

4. The men's basketball team won the National Championship.

5. The baseball team is ranked number 3 in the country.

I can't ever remember a year when UK was nationally competitive in so many sports. So this is my official apology to Mitch Barnhart, who is clearly doing a better job than I thought he was.
