Pope Update

Here's what will happen.  Over the next few months, we will start to see stories about how Kentucky has done "surprisingly well" in the transfer portal, and how the team looks "much better," and that the Cats can definitely "make a run" if everyone "stays healthy."  Next November, UK will start off somewhere around Number 15 in the AP poll, and all the usual suspects will write articles trying to bait UK fans into complaining about Pope, or the Administration, or the team.

None of it will work.  No matter what everyone tries, there will be no buzz around next year's UK team.  No buzz (outside of the type of folks who go to Keeneland) around the UK / U of L game in Lexington.  No buzz about whoever we play in that Champions' Classic where we get embarrassed every year.  No buzz about the Gonzaga game.  No buzz about that December Classic where we played St. John's this season.  No buzz about the SEC regular season, or the games with Tennessee.  Certainly no buzz in the run-up to the annual blowouts by Alabama and Florida.  No buzz at the SEC Tournament.  And no buzz when they miss the NCAA's / lose in the first round / lose in the second round.

After the blowout against Michigan State, I had no interest in any game UK played the rest of the year.  I knew those injured players wouldn't make a difference, and I never even bothered to learn their names.  I knew they weren't reaching the SEC semi-finals.  I knew they weren't reaching the NCAA Regionals.  My only interest was in whether they would lose to Santa Clara, because I thought that would put more pressure on the Administration.  But of course, they pulled that one out -- only to be drilled by 19 against Iowa State (and T.J. Otzelberger!) on Sunday.  After the game, one of the Iowa State players basically said that they expected UK to give up in the second half -- and that's exactly what happened.

The proles are done.  They aren't reading any more articles.  They aren't following any more tweets.  They aren't scanning any more transfer lists.  Most Kentuckians learn early in life that it's a mistake to waste your life on foolish hopes.  They know it's not getting any better under this coach, and as far as they can tell, most people in Lexington couldn't care less.  After all, if they cared, they would have at least interviewed T.J. Otzelberger.

So next year, Lexington will get to have the Cats all to itself.  The Jeeves and Wooster types in the Bluegrass were always embarrassed by the UK fan base, and now they get to see what it's like when we stay home.  My guess is that they will find it less entertaining -- and certainly less profitable -- than it used to be.  And maybe that will change their mind.

  1. UNC has broken with Hubert Davis, even though Davis was within a few points of winning the National Championship for UNC in 2022.

  2. Hubert Davis beat Duke in the 2022 Final Four. He won the last game Coach K ever coached. And UNC fired him anyway.

  3. Here's Herbert Davis's record at UNC:

2022: 29-10 (16th on Ken Pom, lost in the Final)
2023: 20-13 (43d on Ken Pom, missed the NCAAs)
2024: 29-8 (9th on Ken Pom, lost in the Regional Semi-Final)
2025: 23-14 (31st on Ken Pom, lost in the First Round)
2026: 24-9 (32d on Ken Pom, lost in the First Round)

  4. I think UNC is making the right call here, but this is more bad news for UK fans. It will also be bad news for whatever team loses its coach to UNC.

  5. I wonder if UNC will go after Mark Pope.

  6. CBS reports that "There is a standard in Chapel Hill and the program, broadly, has been unable to meet it." I wonder what it's like to have a standard.

  7. Oh, now CBS is telling us that UNC's best player was hurt and missed the tournament. I thought that was a sure-fire excuse for bad results. Maybe only in Lexington?

  8. CBS reports that the donors were going to give less money if Davis stayed.

  9. CBS: "Davis' removal opens up one of the very best jobs in college sports." So -- are they going to check with Danny Hurley and Bryce Drew, and then go for an alum? Again -- that's just a Lexington thing, right?

  10. CBS reports that the following names are under consideration: Tommy Lloyd (Arizona), Dusty May (Michigan), T.J. Otzelberger (Iowa St.), Brad Stevens (!), and Billy Donovan (!!!).

    1. They are also expected to look at Todd Golden (Florida). That would be great news for UK, as the Wildcats have no chance against Florida as long as Golden is there. Of course, it would probably mean three or four national championships for the Heels, but UK no longer plays for those anyway. They're just trying to reach the SEC Semi-Finals.

    2. Of course, the Cats won't ever beat UNC if the Heels have Golden -- or any of these guys, for that matter. But since the Cats lost to UNC and Hubert Davis this season -- at home -- I think we can safely assume that UK wasn't getting any more wins against the Heels for a very long time.

    3. Anyway, the Cats have retired from all that Blue Blood competition. From now on, UK's goals are: (1) reach the SEC Semi-Finals, (2) reach the NCAA Regional Semi-Final. Of course, they haven't achieved both of those goals in the same season since 2019, but we can live in hope.

    4. UK's really more of a football school anyway.

    5. Jon Rothstein reports that UNC is also considering Nate Oats -- that's another guy UK can't beat.

    6. I wonder if anyone at UNC will ask Mitch Barnhart for advice on how to do a coaching search?

    7. Next year, UK will try to reach the SEC Semi-Finals and the NCAA Regional Semi-Finals with no freshman recruits. It's a challenge, but the folks in Lexington live for challenges.

  11. CBS: "Bottom line, the expectation here is for North Carolina to bring in the biggest name and strongest resume of any coach in this year's cycle."

  12. I have rooted against the Heels for almost 50 years, but I will say this for them: they try to win.

  13. Here are my predictions: UNC will be back in the Final Four before Indiana, U of L, Kentucky, Syracuse, Georgetown, or U.C.L.A. I wouldn't be surprised if they made it next year.

  14. But again, to give them credit: They are really trying. Other than U of L (who always try), the rest of the schools I listed really aren't.

  15. I'm just glad Mark Byington wasn't on that list.

  16. Matt Norlander, who recently gave Mark Pope a "B" for his work at UK, tells us that Golden and Oats are in the second tier of UNC's options. The real focus is on Stevens, Donovan, Lloyd, May, and Otzelberger.

    1. So a guy who won the national championship at Florida, and guy who took Alabama to the Final Four, are only Level B candidates for the Heels. Meanwhile, those guys went 4-0 against UK this year, and not one of those games was ever close.

  17. Every day that goes by, I am stunned that Mark Pope is the coach at UK. Hubert Davis would make more sense as the UK coach -- at least he's taken a team to the Final Four.
