Bowl Game Update

So far it's been a good bowl season for Western and the military academies, and a bad one for U of L and the SEC:

Boca Raton Bowl:  W. Kentucky 59, Appalachian St. 38
Armed Forces Bowl:  Army 24, Missouri 22
Gasparilla Bowl:  Cent. Florida 29, Florida 17
Birmingham Bowl:  Houston 17, Auburn 13
First Responder Bowl:  Air Force 31, Louisville 28

  2. The sports news is dominated by the death of John Madden at 85. He was a giant in many ways, and especially to all of us who grew up watching the NFL in the 1970's. His impact is not something that can be properly covered in a comment.

  3. Meanwhile, in Lexington, a big crowd has turned up at Lexington Catholic to watch a showdown between George Rogers Clark (9-1) and North Laurel (8-2) in the White, Greer, and Maggard Holiday Classic. The winner of this game will meet Louisville Ballard in the final. A lot of the crowd -- including Coach Calipari -- is there to see UK recruit Reed Sheppard, the son of UK legend Jeff Sheppard. Last night Reed Sheppard had 50 points as North Laurel beat PRP 100-94 in overtime.

  7. Now word comes that Harry Reid, former Democratic Senator from Nevada, has died at the age of 82. We seem to have a lot of stuff happening tonight.

  8. Summerall and Madden called the following Super Bowls: XVI, XVIII, XXI, XXIV, XXVI for CBS, and XXXI, XXXIII, and XXXVI for Fox.

  9. Madden then called Super Bowls XXXVII and XL for ABC (with Al Michaels), and Super Bowl XLIII for NBC (with Al Michaels).

  10. Madden, of course, won Super Bowl XI. That game was called by Curt Gowdy and Don Meredith for NBC.

    1. I've heard some NFL Films guys--I don't think it was the Sabols--talk about Super Bowl XI being the most beautiful Super Bowl to shoot. The afternoon California light and everything. Super Bowl X, then, and its muddled dome pictures of Denver and Dallas was the worst, they said. It's obvious what they're talking about there, and it's interesting to see how the reverse transformation is effectively what Madden did to commentary and games around the NFL.

  12. This is an entertaining Liberty Bowl -- two scrappy teams, a big crowd in Memphis, a historic old stadium -- it's what bowl games should be. Tech leads 13-7 with 11:57 left in the third quarter.

  16. Texas Tech leads Mississippi State 20-7 with 9 minutes left in the third quarter, and the SEC is about to go 0-4 in Bowl Games.

  17. The SEC has had some bad luck, with Florida's program in freefall and Auburn having to go up against a top-20 team in Houston. But the SEC also just isn't very good once you get past Alabama and Georgia.

    1. Auburn, Tennessee, Florida, LSU: You'd be hard-pressed to find another season in which those four teams were as bad as they were this year.

  18. Lyon County beats Caldwell County 83-77 in Princeton, which is about like Vandy winning at Tennessee. The Lyons are now 5-3, but their three losses are to Goodpasture Christian (Tenn.), Ashland Blazer, and Louisville Trinity.

    1. And now I want to see Lyon County, which is the most interesting of all the counties to me.
