The College World Series

It's been a very long time since North Carolina State won the 1983 NCAA Basketball Tournament.  But so far, the Wolfpack (who started the NCAA Tournament as a number-2 seed forced to travel to Ruston, Louisiana for regionals) have been the big story in the CWS so far.  It's weird to see NCSU this deep into anything, much less without either UNC or Duke anywhere in sight.  Heartache for Vandy, which squandered a magnificent pitching performance by Jack Leiter.

Saturday, June 19:
N. Carolina St. 10, (9) Stanford 4
(4) Vanderbilt 7, (5) Arizona 6 (12 innings)

Sunday, June 20:
Virginia 6, (3) Tennessee 0
(7) Mississippi St. 2, (2) Texas 1

Monday, June 21:
(9) Stanford 14, (5) Arizona 5 (Arizona eliminated)
N. Carolina St. 1, (4) Vanderbilt 0

Today we have a rare matchup between Tennessee and Texas in an elimination game, and a nightcap between Mississippi State and Virginia.

  4. In the top of the 4th, Tennessee gets a run back on a walk and two singles. 4-3 Texas with the Vols still batting.

The official play-by-play tells us that "Tennessee Bench Warned for Arguing." Don't ever change, Tennessee.

  5. Tennessee gets another single and we are tied 4-4 going into the bottom of the 4th. A great game so far.

  6. Texas gets two walks in the bottom of the 4th, and one of the Tennessee coaches has been ejected for yelling at the umpires. And now the Tennessee coaches and the umpires are really going at each other. ESPN tells us that this behavior is consistent with the personality of the Tennessee coaching staff. On the whole, however, they think the umpires are being too strict with the Vols. Having watched the Tennessee coaching staff get into fights with almost everyone this season, I disagree.

  7. Texas gets another huge two-out hit -- a single that scores two runs and puts the Longhorns up 6-4 in the bottom of the 4th. The second run scores on a bang-bang play at the plate. Amazingly, neither the original call nor the appeal went in Tennessee's favor. But at least no one else was rejected.

Texas has six runs on three hits. Tennessee has four runs on seven hits.

  10. UVA, which has already beaten South Carolina and Tennessee in this tournament, is rolling. The Hoos are up 4-0 over Mississippi State in the bottom of the second.

  11. It now seems likely that no SEC team will reach the final.

  12. But wait! In the top of the 8th, after UVA had thrown 16 shut out innings in a row, MSU hits a two-run homer -- and a three-run homer. The Bulldogs suddenly lead the Wahoos 5 to 4.

  13. MSU tacks on one more run to make it 6-4. But UVA homers in the bottom of the 8th to make the score 6-5. What a game!
