Album Review: Lights Out by Ingrid Michaelson

This is a very solid pop album. In the same vein of many solo female artists in 2014, Ingrid Michaelson does a good job keeping this sound fresh and more importantly making it very pop friendly. She also manages however to keep the indie feel that seems so critical to this current run of female artists like Lykke Li, Lana Del Rey, Lorde, etc.

My favorite pop album of the year to this point this album is also a standout because it is a hit with me, my wife and my daughter. That's a rarity. It also works for me because it has both very catchy songs, like the opener "Home," and thoughtful romantic songs like "Wonderful Unkown."  On a good pop album you need that mix to keep the album fresh and interesting as you work through it.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.

  1. You know, I pretty much always seek out stuff that is clearly about a specific thing. I like to know what it is that the writer or painter or singer is trying to write or paint or sing to me about, and then I like to be informed about that thing and to appreciate how creatively that person went about informing me about it. That's the kind of art I tend to seek out for myself.

But every so often, I'm presented with a very compelling something that could pretty clearly be out two or more things--and, in fact, is created in such a way that it seems pretty clear that the artist intends for me to participate in helping uncover the thing's revelation about the meaning of everything real at once. These are the experiences with art that will actually interrupt my day, change my plans, etc.--"in the best way."

Anyway, this song is in that second category. Thanks for introducing me to it.

  2. I'm glad you like the song. It really stood out for me. I know what you mean too about the lyric. I, like you, usually go for less abstract, but there is something that works with this song.
