Kentucky High-school Football, Week 1

Here are some of the games I'll be clueing into this weekend.

McCracken County (0-1) at Mayfield (1-0)

Paducah Tilghman (1-0) at Evansville (Ind.) Reitz--It's so amazing, in fact, that I'm infuriated anytime the Internet doesn't have something I'm looking for--say, for example, the team picture for the 1969 Reitz football Panthers, featuring my oldest brother at defensive back. How can this be possible, in 2013? The Internet (still, ...  Amazing™) does have the team picture for the 1973 Tilghman state-champion Blue Tornadoes, featuring my less-older brother at (cut) center.

Murray (0-1) vs. Calloway County (0-0) at Murray State University--Channel 6 charges up the Lakers.

Trigg County (0-1) at Marshall County (0-0)

Fort Campbell (0-1) at Russellville (1-0)

Mortons Gap Hopkins County Central (0-1) at Crittenden County (1-0) in the Kentucky National Guard Warrior Bowl--Huge Pennyrile Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup.

Caldwell County (1-0) vs. Union County (0-0) at Crittenden County on Saturday in the Ky. National Guard Warrior Bowl

Paris (1-0) at Pikeville Shelby Valley (0-0) in the Community Trust Pike County Bowl

Union Cooper (0-1) vs. Newport Central Catholic (1-0) at Edgewood Dixie Heights in the Skyline Crosstown Showdown

Louisville Trinity (0-1) at Carmel (Ind.)

Evansville North at Henderson County (1-0)

Louisville Central (0-1) at Lexington Lafayette (0-1)

Bowling Green (1-0) vs. Lexington Bryan Station (1-0) at Lexington Catholic on Saturday in the Bluegrass Bowl

Campbell County (1-0) at Fort Thomas Highlands (1-0)

UPDATE (8:56 A.M.): WE WON DONUTS! WE JUST WON DONUTS! "Eric at HeathPostdotcom" just won two dozen delicious Golden Glaze donuts from the radio home of the Madisonville Maroons (one of their radio homes, anyway), WFMW 730 AM "Classic Hit Country!" They even delivered the donuts directly to the Kentucky desk! HOORAY! Thank you, Golden Glaze, and thank you, WMFW! Obviously, I'm totally on the 1-0 Madisonville Maroons' bandwagon now.

  1. In 1973, Tilghman beat Mayfield 53-0, but beat Madisonville 2-0?

Eric, we need a lot more research on that 1973 playoff game between Tilghman and Madisonville. In the regular season, Tilghman beat Madisonville 33-14. Why was the second game so much closer? Where was it played? Were there weather issues?

  2. I do need to get on that. What I do know about the 1973 Tilghman state champs was that they were coached by Dan Haley and that one of their running backs, Andre Greer, competed on one of the American Bandstand dance contests. My parents, brother and I rooted around the TV for him and his dancing partner, but they did not win.

    1. Just based on their schedule and the game scores, they were one of the best teams in Purchase history. That game with Madisonville must have been amazing.

Tilghman and Mayfield should always be the last game of the season for both teams.

    2. Oh, here we go again ... I'd already told about Andre Greer at the HP ... oh, man.

Hey, that reminds me ... I've got a theory about Tiger Woods's nerves in major now compared to 10 or 15 years ago. Maybe I'll get into that next April when the Masters comes around.

  3. Here's what the little Smart Pill Machine says about Fort Campbell and Russellville (apologies to the late, great Leonard Postero):

The Big Cats of Russellville are hunkering down for an aerial invasion, as the Flying Falcons of Fort Campbell look to pick up their first win of the year. Last week, the Falcons had their wings clipped by an angry group of Mayfield Cardinals, but that is nothing to be ashamed of, and the Falcons will like their chances in this game. The Russellville Panthers just got finished winning a cat-fight in Cadiz, and they will be exceptionally dangerous in their home lair. But in the end, the Falcons have just too much fire-power to be denied.

    Leonard's Loser: Russellville.

    1. Love it. I'm picking the Panthers, however.

    2. Mayfield v. McCracken County

Coach Jack Haskins will lead his new gang of Mustangs down Highway 45 to take on Mayfield's Cardinals in their War Memorial Nest. The Mustangs are still getting used to working in the same harness, and they are recovering from last Friday, when their corral was hit by a blue Tornado. Coach Haskins will find that it's difficult to teach young horses new tricks when they are being pecked by a flock of angry Cardinals. The folks in Mayfield are not used to losing football games at home, and that tradition will continue this week.

      Leonard's Loser: McCracken County.

  6. Elizabethtown, which won zero games in 2011 and one in 2012, is received votes for the Class 3A poll after shutting out Edmonson County. The Panthers won the 1969 Class 2A championship and finished runnerup in Class 2A in 1967, 1968 and 2003 and in 3A in 1981.

  7. In Class 2A, Glasgow is No. 3. The Scotties opened the season with a Week Zero loss and trailed Garrard County by 21-19 going into the fourth quarter Friday night, but then ...

Glasgow has finished runnerup in Class 2A four times (1982, 1999, 2000 and 2011) under three different coaches.

    1. Highlands, of course, is No. 1 in Class 4A--and Campbell County.

    2. Yeah, I'm taking Highlands there.

As usual, we begin the season with three trophies pretty much locked up:

6A: Trinity (unless they are upset by St. X)
      4A: Highlands
      3A: Central

    3. For all I know, Bowling Green may have 5A wrapped up as well.

    4. I think Bowling Green does have 5A wrapped up, but I expect St. X to knock off Trinity this year.

    5. Shelbyville Martha Layne Collins bounced back after a season-opening loss and is now 1-1 and ranked fourth in Class 4A. Josh Cook writes in The Sentinel-News that Collins has never lost two straight football games in the school's three-year history.

  9. Neither Clinton County nor Trimble County is ranked. Still, this happened.
