Quarter-Finals Day

With 4:38 left in the third quarter, the Covington Holmes Bulldogs lead the Madison Central Indians 31-26.  These are two great teams and this has been a great game so far.  Further observations in the comments.

    1. Good night! Bolden comes down and hits a long three to make the score 52-50 with 40 seconds left.

Madison Central is trying to hold the ball under intense pressure from Holmes. Finally, the Indians call time with 19 seconds to go. They still lead 52-50.

    2. My gosh, what was going on here? Did you cuss a bunch in all of these comments that you deleted?

    3. I kept referring to Madison Central as "Montgomery County."

    4. Ah. It's so easy to do stuff like that. I just saw a Tweet that somebody on MSNBC called it the "Louisiana Courier-Journal."

  10. With 15.9 seconds left, Hawkins is fouled.

He misses the front end of the one-and-one.

Bolden gets the rebound, and he is fouled with 10.6 seconds to go.

      The Indians call time.

  12. Bolden makes the second free throw! We're tied at 52.

  13. With almost no time left, Hawkins fired up a long shot from three-point range to win the game. It looked good, but bounced off the back rim.

So we're going to overtime, tied at 52.

  14. Remember that in high school, overtime is only four minutes long.

With 2:48 left, Ken-Jah Bosley scores and is fouled for Madison Central. He makes the FT and the Indians lead 55-52.

    1. And now a spectacular play from Hawkins. He blocks a Holmes shot, grabs the rebound, races down the floor and DUNKS!

Hawkins now has 28 points, and Madison Central leads 57-52.

    1. Hawkins appears to be trapped at half court, but a great pass sets up a layup to make the score 59-53.

But then Bolden comes down and hits a three! With 1:09 left, Madison Central leads 59-56. Bolden has 27 points. He and Hawkins are really putting on a show.

Bolden makes both FTs and the score is now 60-58.

      He makes the first FT.

      He makes the second FT.

      Madison Central leads 62-58.

  23. Bolden shoots a long three -- and this time, he misses. That may do it.

    1. But Madison Central misses two free throws, and Holmes has a chance with 24 seconds left.

  24. Rashawn Coston is fouled shooting a three! He makes all three FT's, and the score is now 62-61 with 15 seconds left.

    1. Now Hawkins is fouled. He makes both FT's, and Mad Cent leads 64-61. 13 seconds left.

  25. With almost no time left, Bolden is forced to take a closely-guarded three. He misses, and Madison Central gets the rebound. The Indians make one final FT, and they WIN THE GAME 65-61.

  26. What a great game. Here are the stats for the two stars:

James Bolden of Holmes: 9-20 from the field, 5-9 from three-point range, 6-7 from the line, 29 points and 13 rebounds. Not bad for a sophomore.

Dominique Hawkins of Madison Central: 10-27 from the field, 2-5 from three-point range, 9-12 from the line, 31 points and 12 rebounds.

  27. Next up: The Graves County Eagles and the Hopkinsville Tigers.

  28. In the first round of the 2008 Tournament, Paducah Tilghman beat Greenwood 77-53, and Hazard beat South Laurel 50-47. That was the last time the 1st and 14th Region winners both advanced to the quarter-finals. (Tilghman and Hazard then both lost in the quarter-finals.)

  29. Hoptown has won 24 games in a row. Back on January 17, they went to Graves County and stomped the Eagles 81-59. It will be interesting to see whether the Eagles have learned anything since that game.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Well, the First and Second Regions aren't looking too good right now. Hoptown is 1-11 from the field; Graves is 2-9 from the field, and we are tied 4-4 with 2:32 left in the 1st Quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  31. A sloppy first quarter (12 turnovers, 6 field goals) ends with Hoptown up 8-6.

    ReplyDelete
  32. After a low-scoring second quarter, Hoptown leads 18-16 at the half.

In the first half, Hoptown shot 24.1 percent from the field. Graves shot 22.2 percent. But the Eagles will be happy that they are so close, given that Hoptown blew them out in January.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So far, the Madison Central fans will not be worried about having to play Graves or Hoptown.

Come on, Paducah! Can't someone write a jingle for the River City?

  35. Attendance for today's session: 15,801. Of course, the folks from Richmond should get a lot of credit for that.

    ReplyDelete
  36. With 2:37 left in the third quarter, Graves County has Hoptown somewhat flummoxed. The Tigers have not been able to get their fast break going, and the game is tied at 25.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Here's a typical exchange. Graves holds the ball for about a minute and a half, and is called for traveling. Hoptown keeps the ball for about 15 seconds, and is called for a charge.

Still 25-all with 1:31 left in the third.

    ReplyDelete
  38. With one quarter to go, the game is tied at 27. Hoptown is 10-40 from the field. Graves is 11-38. Still, you have to feel that Graves has to be the happier team at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Hoptown, playing simply excellent defense, waits out Graves County on two long possessions, holds the Eagles scoreless both times, and then scores a basket and a free throw to go up 30-27.

Then Graves finally telegraphs a pass, and Hoptown intercepts the ball and quickly dunks it.

Now the Tigers lead 32-27 with 5:49 to go. Graves calls time.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Pretty much the same-old same-old since the time out. Graves has hit one three-pointer and one layup. Hoptown has made one layup and two free throws. The Tigers lead 36-32 with 2:48 to go.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hoptown's inside game is wearing on Graves. The Tigers are 11-19 from the line, while the Eagles are only 3-3.

Hoptown leads 39-32 with 2:20 to go.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Graves County had a good strategy for this game, and if the Eagles could have made their outside shots they might have pulled the upset. But Graves has made only 3-13 three-pointers, and that's just not good enough. Hoptown leads 44-32 with 1:10 to go.

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's hard for Graves County fans to complain about this result. The Eagles have given it their all, but Hoptown is clearly the better team.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Down the stretch, Hopkinsville just kept getting to the line over and over. Hoptown finished with 27 free throws to only 6 for Graves, and that was pretty much the difference in the game. Final score: Hopkinsville 50, Graves County 34.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hopkinsville reaches the State Semi-Finals for the first time since 2003. They will take on Madison Central, which hasn't made it this far since 1987.
