Kentucky high-school football, Week 7

It's a relatively light slate of games this week, but there are some biggies--St. X-Trinity, of course, primary among them:

Mayfield (No. 1 in the Associated Press poll) at Fulton City

Fairview (AP A No. 3) at Grove City (Ohio) Christian

Edgewood Dixie Heights at Fort Mitchell Beechwood (AP A No. 6)

Prestonsburg at Hazard (AP A No. 7)

Russellville (AP A No. 8) at Fulton County

Elkton Todd County Central at Owensboro Catholic (AP 2A No. 1)

Whitley County at Somerset (AP 2A No. 2)

Barlow Ballard Memorial at Murray (AP 2A No. 4)

Fort Knox at Bardstown (AP 2A No. 5)--
"A recipe for a blowout."

Newport Central Catholic (AP 2A No. 6) at Covington Holmes--"It’s that time of the year, the heart of your season, in which teams just have to grind."

Washington County at Louisville DeSales (AP 2A No. 8)

Glasgow (AP 2A No. 9) at Clinton County

Reidland at Caldwell County (AP 2A No. 10)

Magoffin County at Breathitt County (AP 3A No. 2)

Bell County (AP 3A No. 3) at Casey County--"
They are in the same time zone the game is a 8:00 start to give the Bell Co fans time to travel. Everyone travel safe and bring the BIG BLUE BOBCAT SPIRIT."

East Ridge at Belfry (AP 3A No. 4)

Paducah Tilghman (AP 3A No. 5) at Fort Campbell (AP 3A No. 9)--
The Blue Tornadoes vault from No. 6 to No. 5 in Class 3A on the strength of last week's big win over Heath.

Estill County at Bourbon County (AP 3A No. 6)

Wayne County (AP 3A No. 7) at Corbin

Monroe County (AP 3A No. 8) at Adair County

Jackson County at Morgan County (AP 3A No. 10)

Fort Thomas Highlands (unanimous AP 4A No. 1) at Harrison County--
The Bluebirds are 78-2 since the start of the 2007 season.

Rockcastle County at Russell County (AP 4A No. 4)--
ROCK IS HARD!

Barbourville Knox Central (AP 4A No. 5) at Clay County

Boyd County at Ashland Blazer (AP 4A No. 6)

Franklin-Simpson at Bowling Green Warren East (AP 4A No. 8)--
Warren East's coach, Ben Bruni, to Brian Davis of the Franklin Favorite: "I’m not so sure how our schedule has challenged us ... but we are about to find out during district play."

Ironton (Ohio) at Paintsville Johnson Central (AP 4A No. 9t)

Lone Oak (AP 4A No. 9t) at Owensboro

Logan County at Bowling Green (AP 5A No. 1)--
The defensive coordinator for the Purples, Jeff Griffith, who uses a picture of the late Kim Jong-il at his Twitter page, @CoachGriffith, often Tweets out quotes of the day. Today's was from Tom Coughlin: "We always tell our teams, 'Be humble enough to prepare, confident enough to perform.'"

Elizabethtown John Hardin (AP 5A No. 2) at Elizabethtown Central Hardin--
"We’ve just got to go out and hit them right in the mouth at the first play."

Louisville Ballard (AP 6A No. 10) at Bowling Green Warren Central (AP 5A No. 3)--Second-best game in the state tonight--and the last tuneup for the home-standing Dragons before a week off and then an Oct. 12 game with the arch-rival BG Purples.

Franklin County (AP 5A No. 4) at East Jessamine--
"The Flyer offense hit a bit of a bump last week, but not many teams can say they scored 42 points and were 24 points below their average."

Union Randall K. Cooper (AP 5A No. 5) at Hebron Conner (AP 5A No. 10)--Third best game tonight? Cooper has the state's best scoring defense, and Conner's offense is among the state's highest scorers. Well, the KHSAA thinks so, anyway; neither Heath nor Trinity submitted its statistics this week.

  1. Tom Rogers of the great WKDZ weighs in with his Trigg-Webster and Fort Campbell-Tilghman previews:

The Trigg County Wildcats came up just a little short in a wild district shootout last Friday night against the Fort Campbell Falcons, falling 56-40. It's another key district matchup this week, as the Wildcats hit the road to Dixon, to take on the Webster County Trojans. Trigg will look to rebound and go 1-1 in the district, while the game is the district opener for the Trojans. Coverage of Trigg County and Webster County will get underway Friday night at 6:00 on WKDZ 106.5 and wkdzradio.com.

Fort Campbell got a huge night from sophomore running back Triston Luke last Friday in a big 56-40 district win at Trigg County. Luke rushed for more than 300 yards and six touchdowns in the game, which saw the two teams combine for eight 4th quarter touchdowns. The Falcons return home to post tonight for a big district showdown against Paducah Tilghman. A win over the Blue Tornado would go a long way towards securing the top seed in the district for the Falcons. Coverage of Fort Campbell and Paducah Tilghman gets started at 6:00pm Friday with the Toyota of Hopkinsville Friday Night Blitz on Oldies 96.5 WHVO and oldies1480.com.

  3. Powell County, 1-4 this season after in 2011 posting its best record in program history, hosts Garrard County tonight. The Pirates got their first win last week at rival Estill County, which was also winless. The final from Irvine was 48-44!

Estill tonight visits Bourbon County, ranked sixth in Class 3A.

  4. With 5:31 in the second quarter, Calloway County throws a 40-or-so-yard touchdown pass to take a 27-0 lead at Hopkins County Central. "It looks like they're playing pattycake out there," says one Storm fan (in a T-shirt reading, "GOD FAMILY WILDCAT FOOTBALL") to another. Meanwhile, the 18 girl and one boy cheerleader cheer on dutifully. "Hit 'em again, hit 'em again, har-DER, har-DER!" And: "We are! Cen! Tral! We Are! Cen! Tral!" And: "C! H! S! C! H! S! C! H! S!" This one throws me for a bit--"CH?" Central Hopkins? I thought it was Hopkins Central. Ah: Central High School=CHS.

A little bit ago, the public-address announcer noted that Fort Campbell is leading Tilghman, 14-0. I could probably make it down there in about an hour and maybe catch the last half of the last quarter, except I'm not sure how complex it is to get on base and to the school.

I could run up to Dixon, where Trigg County is playing Webster County. Scott Brown with WKDZ passed through Country Cupboard in Madisonville en route from Cadiz to Dixon. That's a heck of a detour, but he Tweeted back to me that it was a "must." Country Cupboard is good, but I'm surprised it would rate quite this highly.

    Madisonville-North Hopkins is idle tonight.

I could run down to the ol' Stadium of Champions on the south side of Hoptown and watch Christian County and Ohio County. I'll bet that score is as bad as this one by now, though.

"Here's the score of the night for you, soccer fans," says the PA announcer here in Mortons Gaps. "Crittenden County 2, Marshall County 0--that's at the half. But that's a football score, not soccer."

    Henderson County's off.

    Hoptown's playing up at Apollo.

2:03 to play in the half, and it's 34-0, Lakers.

"We have a great halftime show for you! A great halftime show! So please stay in your seats."

    Um ...? Sorry, bud.

  5. Christian County 21, Ohio County 3 at half in Hoptown. The Ohio County radio guys on 99.9 FM (from Hartford, presumably) say that Ohio County is "playing pretty well. You wouldn't think it from the score, but they really are."

  6. Oh, my! Joey Fosko just Tweeted that Fort Campbell is leading Tilghman, 33-0, in the second quarter!

The Blue Tornadoes might've edged Heath last week, but the Pirates took it out of them!

  8. So the best game within driving distance for the end of its second half might well be Christian County-Ohio County.

  9. WKDZ: "The report I'm getting is that Tilghman just kind of came out listless. ... Remember I told you that they're tough it you come out and let them get some momentum and some energy. But they're undisciplined ..."

  10. Actually, the game to get to would be Crittenden at Marshall. Still 2-0. No way I could make Draffenville before that one ends, though.

  11. 9:56 to go in the third at Papa John's, and Trinity is up, 21-7, on St. X.

    ReplyDelete
  12. OK, definitely the game to be at anywhere near here is Lone Oak at Owensboro ... the Red Devils lead, 24-17, in the third quarter, but the Purple Flash just recovered a fumble on the Owensboro 26 ...

  13. Bowling Green beat Logan County, 62-0; meanwhile, Warren Central is up 10 on visiting Louisville Ballard.

    3. Hoptown's statkeeper started keeping stats for the Tigers in 1980, and he says a runner named Killebrew (sp?) has broken the team's single-game rushing record that he has recorded. The guy has 312 yards right now. WHOP refers to this as "the modern era."

      Delete
    4. One of the WHOP commentators notes that the modern-era-record-breaker is the son of an Oak Grove police officer and the Oak Grove tourism director. The other WHOP commentator knows both of those people and is delighted to learn of the connection to the Hoptown runner.

First loss for Cooper, which trailed 21-0 at the half but got it to within 28-21 in the third quarter.
