Kentucky high-school football, Week 4

There was some jostling around the six sets of 10, but no new teams cracked their classes' top 10s in this week's Associated Press poll. That seems kind of silly.

Among this week's games:

Fulton County at West Paducah Heath

Fort Mitchell Beechwood (AP A No. 6) 54 at Covington Holy Cross (AP 2A No. 8) 21--Beechwood started the season with two losses, but the red-and-white Tigers--state football champions in 1984, 1991-94, 1996-97, 1999, 2004, 2007 and 2008--got the freakin' weekend rolling early last night with a big win on the other side of the suburbs.

Mayfield (AP A No. 1) at Murray (AP 2A No. 5)

Hazard (AP A No. 2) at Somerset (AP 2A No. 2)--Hazard, the defending Class A champ, was off last week, and the inactivity--combined with Mayfield's dominance of Paducah Tilghman--cost the Bulldogs in the minds of the poll voters. Last week, Hazard received five of 12 No. 1 votes in the poll; this week, it received only one of 10--the other nine going to Mayfield.

Frankfort (AP A No. 3) at Franklin County (AP 5A No. 4)

Leslie County at Williamsburg (AP A No. 5)

Greenup County at Raceland-Worthington (AP A No. 7)

Louisville Kentucky Country Day (AP A No. 8) at Carroll County

Russellville (AP A No. 9) at Bowling Green South Warren

Pikeville (AP A No. 10) at Inez Sheldon Clark

Owensboro Catholic (AP 2A No. 1) at South Spencer (Ind.)--Owensboro Catholic got seven of 10 votes for No. 1 in Class 2A this week, none last week.

Corbin at Danville (AP 2A No. 4)

Cincinnati (Ohio) Hills Christian Academy at Lexington Christian (AP 2A No. 6)

Allen County-Scottsville at Glasgow (AP 2A No. 7)

Nelson County at Bardstown (AP 2A No. 9)

Louisville Central (unanimous AP 3A No. 1) at Louisville Ballard (AP 6A No. 7)

Breathitt County (AP 3A No. 2) at Jackson County

Whitley County at Bell County (AP 3A No. 3)

Prestonsburg (AP 2A No. 10) at Belfry (AP 3A No. 4)

Graves County at Paducah Tilghman (AP 3A No. 5)

Wayne County (AP 3A No. 7) at Madison Southern

Fort Campbell (AP 3A No. 8) at Fort Knox

Lincoln County at Garrard County (AP 3A No. 9)

Monroe County (AP 3A No. 10) at Barren County

Fort Thomas Highlands (AP 4A No. 1) at Louisville Western

Boone County at Covington Catholic (AP 4A No. 2) on Saturday

Russell at Ashland Blazer (AP 4A No. 4)--Blazer got one vote for No. 1, stealing one from Highlands, which was the Class 4A unanimous pick last week.

Pulaski County at Russell County (AP 4A No. 5)

Gatlinburg (Tenn.) Pittman at Barbourville Knox Central (AP 4A No. 7)

Lone Oak (AP 4A No. 8) at Christian County (AP 5A No. 8)

Lexington Lafayette at Owensboro (AP 4A No. 10)

Bowling Green (unanimous AP 5A No. 1) at Henderson County (AP 6A No. 10)

Elizabethtown John Hardin (AP 5A No. 2) at Boyle County (AP 4A No. 6)

Meade County at Bowling Green Warren Central (AP 5A No. 3)

Union Randall K. Cooper (AP 5A No. 5) at Campbell County

Hebron Conner (AP 5A No. 6) at Dixie Heights

Bowling Green Greenwood (AP 5A No. 9) at Franklin-Simpson

Cincinnati (Ohio) Elder at Louisville Trinity (unanimous AP 6A No. 1)

Lexington Catholic (AP 4A No. 3) at Louisville Male (AP 6A No. 2)

Louisville Doss at Louisville Saint Xavier (AP 6A No. 3)

Richmond Madison Central at Scott County (AP 6A No. 4)

Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park (AP 6A No. 5) at Louisville duPont Manual (AP 6A No. 9)

Shelbyville Martha Layne Collins at Louisville Eastern (AP 6A No. 6)

Covington Holmes at Independence Simon Kenton (AP 6A No. 8)

Barlow Ballard at Calloway County

Hopkinsville at Madisonville-North Hopkins

Union County at Crittenden County

Trigg County at Caldwell County

Lake County (Tenn.) at Reidland

South Fulton (Tenn.) at Fulton City

Hopkins County Central at Ohio County

Marshall County vs. Webster County

Fairview (AP A No. 4), Newport Central Catholic (AP 2A No. 3), Bourbon County (AP 3A No. 6), Paintsville Johnson Central (AP 4A No. 9), Hebron Estates North Bullitt (AP 5A No. 10) and Harlan County (AP 5A No. 7) appear to be idle this weekend.

    1. E-Town should keep playing Central Hardin. Tilghman has been bigger than Mayfield for almost 100 years, and those two schools have played the whole time.

    1. Here's the WKDZ/WHVO gameplan for this evening ...

The Trigg County Wildcats made it two wins in a row last Friday night, as the Cats rolled over Crittenden County 42-21 in the second game of the Kentucky Machine & Engineering David Sadler Bowl. Up next for Trigg County is a trip up the road to Princeton tonight to take on the high flying offense of the Caldwell County Tigers. Caldwell County is coming off back to back wins over Union County and Ohio County, in which the Tigers have scored a total of 101 points. Coverage of Trigg County at Caldwell County will get underway tonight at 6:00 with the Toyota of Hopkinsville Friday Night Blitz on WKDZ 106.5 and wkdzradio.com

A tough night last Friday night for the Fort Campbell Falcons, as they ran into one of the top teams in Class 5-A, in the Warren Central Dragons. Warren Central took control of the game early in the second quarter and never looked back, as they won 58-13. The Falcons will try to rebound this week as they go on the road for the annual Army Bowl game tonight against Fort Knox. Fort Knox comes into the matchup with a record of 1-2, losing last week to Butler County, 28-14. Coverage of Fort Campbell and Fort Knox gets underway at 6:00pm on Oldies 96.5 WHVO and oldies1480.com.

  4. With a band of storms lurching across Kentucky, many games were kicked off early, and now several are being delayed and even called early. The Bowling Green High Purples, for example, are loading up for home after their game at Henderson County was whistled over with the visitors leading, 21-7.

  5. As of about 20 minutes ago, Channel 6 posted that Fulton County was leading, 8-7, at Heath with 11:55 to play in the second quarter. As I understand it, the KHSAA rule on this deal mandates a 30-minute delay in the event that lightning is seen. Every subsequent sighting then restarts the 30-minute delay.

Graves County and Tilghman, meanwhile, decided with 5:45 to go in the first to just hold off until 6:30 tomorrow evening. The Eagles lead, 7-0. I wonder if Graves County has ever beaten Tilghman.

(Bowling Green had never beaten Henderson County.)

  18. Oh, man, rough night in Princeton ... Caldwell County finally gives up the ghost of getting to get back on the field, and so Trigg County is declared the 38-37 winner with 5:42 remaining in regulation--and after an hour-and-20-minute vigil for the storm to pass. It still hasn't.

"Good night, and God bless from Princeton," the WKDZ commentator signs off.

  20. But what of Pilots-at-Pirates?

As of 9:20, per Channel 6, Fulton County and Heath remained in lightning delay with the visitors up, 8-7, with 11:55 to play in the second quarter. There's no way they would have Fulton County drive all the way back down to Hickman tonight and then back again to West Paducah tomorrow to resume this thing, would they?

  21. Says the local Messenger: "The Madisonville-North Hopkins game with Hopkinsville has been postponed to 5 p.m. Saturday at Browning Springs, with the score tied at 14-14 with 5:49 left in the third quarter."

Browning Springs is the downtown middle school and the former Madisonville High School. The football field is a WPA jobber, and it's where my dad as a freshman served on the Maroons cheerleading squad.

  22. Saturday finishes:

    -- Calloway County 52, Ballard Memorial 14
    -- Covington Catholic 34, Boone County 0
    -- Crittenden County 35, Union County 6
    -- Graves County 20, Paducah Tilghman 15
    -- Lake County 54, Reidland 14
    -- Madisonville-North 36, Hoptown 14
    -- Owensboro Catholic 24, South Spencer 14

And, so now, the state's prep-football attention has a day to collect itself around West Paducah, where Fulton County and Heath are scheduled to reconvene at 6:30 p.m Monday and resume their game with the visiting Pilots leading the Pirates, 8-7, with 11:55 to play in the second quarter.
