  1. There simply is no more interesting-looking sport in the Olympics than team-pursuit cycling. The men's final is being contested now.

    1. "Brilliant ride by the Kiwis," says the commentator on NBC's live feed, as New Zealand beats Russia for bronze.

    2. And now Australia and Great Britain race for gold ...

    3. "Great Britain extends the lead to 0.9 seconds. They're going to defend the gold medal. It's going to be pandemonium at the velodrome! ... Two seconds now ahead on Australia! ... They've broken the green-and-gold's heart! ..."

    4. "IT'S A PARTY IN THE VELODROME!"

    5. I feel cooler for simply having watched this race.

    6. Men's team-pursuit cycling medals: Great Britain gold, Australia silver, New Zealand bronze.

    7. Britain now has 20 medals (and 7 golds), while Australia has 14 medals (and only 1 gold). The Brits are very happy about this.

    8. Taylor Phinney (USA) won the individual pursuit gold in both the 2009 and 2010 world championships. He was injured last year and didn't compete. Sad to say that was cut from this Olympics and so he had no opportunity to win that gold.

  2. In the semi-final of men's tennis, Roger Federer (SUI) beat Juan Del Potro (ARG) 3-6, 7-6, 19-17. It was quite a match.

  3. Here are today's scores so far from women's basketball. The big news is that Turkey blew out China:

    Angola 56 - 75 Croatia
    Russia 66 - 70 Australia
    Brazil 73 - 79 Canada
    Turkey 82 - 55 China

The U.S. plays the Czech Republic later today.

  4. In women's soccer, the United States beat New Zealand 2-0 to reach the semi-finals.

  5. Men's 25m rapid-fire pistol medals: Cuba gold, India silver, China bronze.

Mixed-doubles badminton: China gold, China silver, Denmark bronze.

  6. China came out on fire this morning. By noon EDT, they had captured seven more medals, while the U.S. has done nothing. China now leads the medal count 41-37.

  7. Tiger Woods is not going to win the Bridgestone Invitational. With one hole left in the second round, he is two over for the day and the tournament -- and 13 strokes behind Jim Furyk, who is in the lead.

  8. The "Brady Bunch" remake has made the Drudge Report.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Does the Drudge Report still exist? And, to be clear, it's really a Brady Bunch update, not a remake, as I understand it.

      Delete
    2. I prefer to think of it as a remake, because the thought of a divorced Bobby Brady is just too horrible to contemplate.

  9. Italy and Russia battling for the men's team-sabre fencing gold. Italy is the all-time leader in medals in the sport, and they lead this match, 42-37. First to 45 wins ...

    1. Italy wins, and the Italian fencer who clinches it rips off his mask to reveal the following shaved into the back of his hair:

    2. This was the bronze-medal match--sorry. South Korea gold, Romania silver, Italy bronze.

    3. I wonder if it said, "GOD SAVE THE QUEEN." That would make some sense.

  10. Men's individual archery: South Korea gold, Japan silver, China bronze.

Men's heavyweight judo: France gold, Russia silver, Germany and Brazil bronze.

Women's heavyweight judo: Cuba gold, Japan silver, Great Britain and China bronze.

Women's 165-pound weightlifting: Kazakhstan gold, Russia silver, Belarus bronze.

  11. Referring to that TV show "Revolution" that NBC keeps promoting -- about what happens if there's no more electricity -- my advice is that if you find yourself in such a world, sign onto the nearest warlord. By pledging fealty to a warlord, you can get your share of the plunder. Otherwise, you're liable to be plundered.

One possibility would be to join the Manning clan. I think Archie, Peyton, and Eli would make great warlords -- in fact, I would predict them to become the dominant clan in the South.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Also, be realistic about your abilities. Not everyone is cut out for pre-modern warfare. And the clans will need other people anyway. You may want to be a scribe, for example. Or a priest. (Although the Manning Clan would probably just have "preachers," not priests.)

      Delete
    2. But try to become as useful as possible -- that way, if your clan is defeated, the conquering clan may employ you instead of simply killing you.

      Delete
    3. I'm going to try to get in with whatever clan John Calipari aligns himself with.

      Delete
    4. I thought about that. I see him and Pitino as distinctly urban types -- they would dominate politics from behind the scenes in whatever is left of Louisville and Lexington.

In fact, you could write a fabulous post-apocalyptic novel about a war between Louisville (and its colonies) and Lexington (and its colonies).

  12. Other women's soccer quarter-finals:

    Sweden 1 - 2 France
    Japan 2 - 0 Brazil

France will play Japan, while the United States will take on the winner of Great Britain and Canada. That means that Our Girls will probably face a very hostile crowd in their semi-final match.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well, Our Girls may not play Great Britain after all. After 12 minutes, Canada bangs home a goal to take a 1-0 lead over the host team.

    ReplyDelete
  14. And now Canada leads 2-0 after 25 minutes as they score on a lovely free kick (that, in my opinion, the goalkeeper should have caught).

  15. The men's single sculls rowing medalists look like a product-marketing team for a software startup: New Zealand gold, Czech Republic silver, Great Britain bronze.

  16. Men's quadruple sculls: Germany gold, Croatia silver, Australia bronze. First medal for Croatia!

  17. Make all the fun you want of New Zealand, but at least their PR people got it together when it came time to submit photos for NBCOlympics.com. Men's pair rowing: New Zealand gold, France silver, Great Britain bronze.

Men's trampoline? China gold, Russia silver, China bronze. Yes, trampoline. Men's trampoline.

  19. Women's Kieren cycling: Great Britain gold, China silver, Hong Kong bronze. First medal for Hong Kong!

    2. Well, it turned out to be not such a lackluster day for Team ol' U.S. of A., after all.

Women's 800m freestyle swimming: United States gold, Spain silver, Great Britain bronze. Congratulations, gold-medal-winning Katie Ledecky of Washington, Md.! At 15, she's the United States' youngest Olympian.

Men's 100m butterfly: United States gold, South Africa and Russia silver. Congratulations, Michael Phelps of Baltimore!

Women's 200m backstroke: United States gold, Russia silver, United States bronze. Congratulations gold-medalist Missy Franklin of Centennial, Colo., and bronze-medalist Elizabeth Beisel of Saunderstown, R.I.!
