Thank God for people who sit down and do hard stuff like figuring out fair and reasonable, 16-team, double-elimination software brackets and schedules, and thank God for people who go out and do hard stuff like building four-field softball complexes. What a fun, fun day this looks like for everybody in Owensboro (and, heck, even for those of us who will have to settle for following the action from our desks via the KHSAA and Twitter). Thank God for all the players and coaches, umpires and other officials, bus drivers and hotel/restaurant chaperones, reporters, bracket figure-outers and four-field-complex builders who've had a hand in making all of today's fun possible.

    1. Courier-Journal's Jason Frakes can see all four games from the press box, but he's most closely following No. 3 Greenwood vs. No. 4 Mercy.

    2. In the extra 8th, a Ryle runner scores from second on a single to right, and North Laurel is relegated to the losers' bracket--and the prospect of having to win three more games today after 1 p.m. if the Kelly green, royal blue and white Lady Chargers hope to stay in contention for a state championship.

      Delete
  2. Boyle County, state-tournament first-timers, win again: 8-0 over Estill. The Boyle-Ryle winner at 3 p.m. is done until Saturday.

  7. Ashland Blazer is playing its infielders in, and Todd's color commentator doesn't like County's bunting strategy:

  8. Wait a second! In tuning in the WHOP stream, I failed to hear that Christian County had actually doubled to open the inning. 11. Oh, no ... Greenwood's star pitcher, Moss, has injured her back early in the game with Christian County, and she has left the game. Greenwood beat Christian County in the regular season, but the Lady Colonels lead this one already, 1-0, after the first half inning.

Per that feature by Zach Greenwell yesterday, Moss is considered the state's second-best softball player--behind a player for Allen County-Scottsville.

  16. So, next, Greenwood turned around and beat Ryle, 2-0. This was the third straight game that the Lady Gators won without Elizabeth Moss, their star pitcher, who apparently aggravated a back injury that had been developing over the course of the season, per Zach Greenwell's reporting in Bowling Green's Daily News. Greenwood's coach was even talking about Moss's coming back late in today's action, so, presumably, there's a chance she'll be in action tomorrow.
