One and done: Girls' Sweet Sixteen

When I wrote for newspapers, I never used the front parts of the names on these tournaments because I figured the front end was just a promotion and the back end was what the thing was. But now that I do PR for companies, I always try to go to the trouble of using them. I spent $5 to get into the Second Region boys' semis the other night and $2 on unnaturally-yellow nachos once I got in there the other night. And I pay for the Internet connection and electricity in the house to follow the action from afar. And I'm sure I've purchased something if only subconsciously under the influence of some ad I've seen or heard along the way. But, by and large, I get to have all this fun with the girls' state basketball tournament over the next four days thanks to the expenditures of Houchens Industries and the other sponsors (even if they are for the tax break) and the efforts of the schools and their communities. I'm thankful for all of them.

Today's first-round games in the 2012 Houchens Industries/KHSAA Girls Sweet Sixteen® Basketball Tournament at Western Kentucky University's E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green:

-- Lincoln County Lady Patriots of Stanford vs. Clay County Lady Tigers of Manchester at 8 p.m. Central

I'm for all of these teams. Here's a printable bracket for you, and here are the pre-tournament notes they're handing out to the media, and here are links to the iHigh.com live video. You rock, KHSAA. Rah!

  1. I would appreciate it if anyone could tell us who Suda Butler was.

  2. Jody Demling in The Courier-Journal reports that the Lady Scotties include "perhaps the best eighth-grader in the state," in Breanna Gover.

He has no information on Suda Butler, however.

  3. 20 apiece, the game re-tied on a bucket by the Lady Scotties' star eighth-grader ... Glasgow's WCLU: "The bad quarter we've had, you've got to figure, if we can stay in there, it will be to our advantage."

  13. 26 seconds to go ... I'm not sure what went on during that cut in the broadcast, but Butler ended up back at the free-throw line and made one. Now Glasgow, trailing 52-49, is at the free-throw line with 13 seconds to go ... miss ... miss ... Butler rebound ... fouled ...

  15. Suda moves on, and the Lady Scotties' first Sweet Sixteen appearance is short.

From the media notes: "ABSOLUTELY no cheering, coaching or clapping (or contesting officials’ calls) will be permitted in working media areas. Those members violating this policy will lose all press row privilege and possible access to future KHSAA events."

  16. Yes, but what about pretend high-school newspapers?

"Due to space limitations, weekly papers are asked to rotate seating during games involving teams from their coverage area. A reserved press row seat for the entire tournament is not available to weekly media outlets. Four seats on press row will be marked “Weekly Papers”. You may sit in these seats during your game, but to accommodate others, we ask that you return to the auxiliary seating during games not involving teams from your coverage area."

    1. I wouldn't want to be in the media section anyway. I want to cheer.

    2. And I definitely want to contest officials' calls.

If there is another female player in state better than Sydney Moss, I haven't seen her. She has 16 to lead Boone Co to a 26-20 2nd qtr lead

  19. Despite 26 points and 11 rebounds from Randy Moss's daughter (and Moss, Peyton Manning's deep threat on 2012 Miami Dolphins, rooting on the Lady Rebels in Diddle), Boone County's lead is gone. It's 49-49 with 4:34 to play.

  20. 1:08 to play ... 53-53 ... Both teams have hit only have of their free throws (Dunbar six of 12, Boone three of six) ...

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sydney Moss with a fast-break layup for Boone (30 points, 12 rebounds), and the Lady Rebels surge ahead 55-53 ... but then Dunbar beats back the defense and scores a short jumper ... tied again! ... 55-55, 34 seconds ... timeout ... Boone County possession coming ...

    ReplyDelete
  22. Moss ... driving layup from the top of the key, splitting two defenders ... 57-55, Boone County ... 32 points for Moss ...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Dunbar scores on a driving layup of its own, but then Moss comes back and scores a 10-foot jumper in transition: 59-57, Boone County ...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jordin Fender raced the length of the court with the inbounds pass, veered right of the goal and shot a leaner over Moss on the run: 59-59.

At the regulation buzzer, Moss banged a three-quarter-court heave off the front of the rim.

Fender has 19 points (eight of 20 field-goal shooting) and five assists for Dunbar; Moss, 34 points (17 of 33 shooting), 12 rebounds and four assists for Boone.

  25. 65-63, Dunbar, with two and a half to go ... "The people in here are getting they're money's worth today!" says one KHSAA TV commentator. "If I were them, I'd go back out and pay again," says the other.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Heck, Moss is apparently going to the University of Florida next year.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 13 seconds left ... Moss gets to 38 points on a layup off a steal to pull Boone County within 70-67, but she misses a three-point try ... and now Dunbar has hit two free throws to push out to 72-67 ... Boone County travel ... 3.5 seconds ...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Moss 3-pointer at the buzzer. 72-70 victory for Dunbar. 41 points for Moss.

Dunbar seemed to wear out Boone County. Two of the Lady Bulldogs' starters, Fender (21 points and five assists) and Kierra Mohammed (11 points, five rebounds, five assists), are members of Dunbar's Class 3A state champion 4x100-meter relay team.

In the postgame interview with the KHSAA TV people, Fender gives "a shoutout to Sydney Moss, my AAU teammate."

  29. So we're done until 6:30 when Manual and Perry Central fire it up in the penultimate game of Day 1. Time to eat. I'm not of much help on recommendations, given that Time-out Deli and Reno's appear to have closed. Maybe they're still serving chicken-and-cheese sandwiches up at Garrett Conference Center?

    ReplyDelete
  30. 3:48 to go, and Manual leads Perry Central, 45-39. This is the game of the first round, pitting the state's No. 1 and 4 teams, respectively, in the latest Courier-Journal Litkenhous Ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Manual ended up beating Perry Central, 50-41, and Montgomery County is up 17 at half against Muhlenberg.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Montgomery County 60
    Muhlenberg County 43

    The end.
