Oh, Kentucky

Summer's almost here.

Not quite, though. It'll be Mayfield vs. Calloway County for the First Region baseball championship, 5 p.m. Central today at Brooks Stadium in Paducah. The Kentucky National Insurance/KHSAA state tournament commences Monday at Whitaker Bank Park in Lexington. Five or six slots in the bracket have already been filled: Union County, from the Second Region; Owensboro Apollo, Third; Warren East, Fourth; Cecilia Central Hardin, Fifth, and Lexington Catholic, 11th. Somerset and Mercer County were scheduled to play last night for the 12th title. The regional championships continue through Saturday, when Boyd County and Ashland Paul Blazer are scheduled to vie for the 16th crown.

In fast-pitch softball, meanwhile, Calloway County edged Reidland, 6-5, in Wednesday's First Region championship. Other state-tournament qualifiers so far: Owensboro Catholic from the Third; Central Hardin, Fifth; Montgomery County, 10th; Lexington Lafayette, 11th; Letcher County Central, 14th, and either East Jessamine or Pulaski County from the late-reporting 12th. Depending on how upcoming fiscal-year sales go at the HeathPo Cafe Press store, we might be prepared to bid on naming rights for the 2012 KHSAA fast-pitch tournament.

Ahlso, ... just a little over two months from kickoff.

Turning to the pros, our River Monsters and Drillers will both be on the road for the first round of this weekend's Ultimate Bowl I Playoffs.

Meanwhile, from the bird beat, ...

The Joseph "Eddie" Ballard Western Kentucky Veterans Center in Hanson is quite nice, by the way.

It's jarring to read any 1980 model referred to as a "classic" car.

  1. The car was called the Malibu Classic.

  4. Earlier in the story, he referred to the 1980 Malibu Classic as a "classic car" generic. That's the jarring part.

  5. I didn't get that that was one of the classic cars David Price was admiring, but maybe so. It's a 31 year old car. In 1980 that would have been a car from 1949 certainly it would have been considered a classic.

  6. I'm not saying it's an inaccurate characterization--just an alarming one.
