Ah, Footbah

The No. 1 teams in the Class A and 2A Associated Press polls, Mayfield and Newport Catholic, are idle, and I'm on vacation. But The Heath Post rolls on:

Trigg County at Heath. Let's all hope the visiting Wildcats are lethargic after eating too much country ham all week.

Fulton County at Ballard Memorial. The Heath Post today breaks a major scoop. When my daughter, father-in-law and I were leaving Roy Stewart Stadium after Murray State's thrilling victory over Missouri State last Saturday, I overheard somebody in the stands above us yell, "ALEX MALLORY!" This is the name of Ballard Memorial's strong-armed, red-headed quarterback, and, when I turned around to look, I saw some strapping, red-headed kid smiling and waving back at somebody in the viscinity of the yell's origin. I will be excited to see if Ballard Memorial's Alex Mallory ends up playing for the Racers.

Monroe County at Glasgow. The home-standing Scotties are 6-1 and on a six-win streak. Monroe County is also 6-1. The AP has Monroe County fifth and Glasgow seventh in 2A.

Hopkins County Central at Lone Oak. The Purple Flash's freshman quarterback completed all but one of 12 passes for 294 yards in a 63-28 victory over Calloway County last week, Tommy Dillard reported this week in the Murray Ledger & Times. What I need to find out is whether Cole Ousley, the quarterback whom Coach Haskins is starting, happens to be the son of the Jamie Ousley, Reidland's starting quarterback in the mid 1980s, and grandson of Mrs. Ousley, Matthew's and my fifth-grade teacher!

McLean County at Paducah Tilghman. Dan Schumerth wrote in The Union County Advocate this week, "Despite being out-gained 403-178 in total yards and 19-10 in first downs offensively, Paducah Tilghman took advantage of a 10-yard Union County punt and a late kickoff return for a touchdown to escape with a 21-18 win over the Braves Friday."

Breathitt County at Powell County. Powell County pierced the AP's 3A top 10 this week, after moving to 6-1 on the season. Last week's 40-14 victory at Magoffin County secured second winning season "in the two-decade-plus history for the football team," the Clay City Times reported.

Bardstown at Washington County. My darling Commanders continue to receive little love from the AP, who has Washington County No. 9 in this week's 2A top 10. Washington and No. 2 Murray are the only two undefeated teams in the AP's top 10 for the class.

AP 4A No. 1 Boyle County at West Jessamine. It was home-standing East Jessamine who prevailed, 32-23, over West in last Friday night's battle of Nicholasville.

Murray at Caldwell County

Fulton City at Crittenden County

Louisville Trinity at Eastern

Covington Catholic at AP 5A No. 1 Highlands

Ohio County at Madisonville-North Hopkins

South Fulton (Tenn.) at Reidland

Wayne County at AP 3A No. 1 Somerset

Louisville DuPont Manual at Louisville Saint Xavier

  4. However, when I can steal away from family-vacation doings, I'm listening to Trigg County at Heath.

    ReplyDelete
  5. The WKDZ radio pre-game dudes just said that Heath's football coach told them that the McCracken County High School delay has to do with problems with one or more of the construction contractors. They've thrown open parts of the job for rebidding.

  6. I started counting Kentucky license plates around Knoxville yesterday on our drive to Gatlinburg. Since I started counting, I've seen two from Jefferson County and one each from Hopkins, Fayette, Daviess, Henderson, Christian and Mason.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Trigg 6-0 midway through the first quarter, and Heath just punted back to the Wildcats. The punt snap bounced off the ground to the punter, says WKDZ.

    ReplyDelete
  8. EXCELLENT! I just came back in to find that Heath has now gotten back the ball, and Trigg County's lead remains only 6-0.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Shoot. Trigg County just recovered a fumble.

    ReplyDelete
  10. YEAH! TOUCHDOWN, HEATH! 7-6, Heath, with 1about two minutes to go in the first quarter ... I think it's time to break out the theme of Heath's 1986 senior prom!

    ReplyDelete
  11. WKDZ reports that Murray is leading Caldwell County, 13-0 ...

    ReplyDelete
  12. And one quarter is in the books, and the Pirates continue to hold a 7-0 advantage on Trigg County!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Shoot. Trigg County 12, Heath 7. WKDZ dude: Heath quarterback "Javon Bell is listed as 5-11, 145 pounds, and I don't think he weighs that much."

    ReplyDelete
  14. This time, the punt snap is high, and Trigg County partially blocks a punt. The ball dies at the Heath 24.

  16. 20-7, Trigg, with 1:56 to go in the first half ...

Meanwhile, Channel 6 Tweets that Paducah Tilghman is leading McLean County, 25-0, and Crittenden County is up, 28-0, on Fulton City ...

    ReplyDelete
  17. YEAH! The Pirates strike back! With 41 seconds to play in the half, Heath is back within, 20-14.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Indeed, Henderson County is blasting Marshall, 49-0, at the half, WPSD says.

    ReplyDelete
  19. One ref says touchdown for Heath, and one ref wants to give Trigg County the ball at the Trigg County 1 ... BOO!

    ReplyDelete
  20. 12.3 seconds to go ... they gave Trigg County the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Trigg County punts ... 6.7 seconds to go in the first half, and Heath will get a shot from the Wildcat 35.

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's Trigg County 20, Heath 14, as we head into the Kelly's Pizzeria Halftime Show.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Trigg County attempted three two-point conversions in the first half (scoring on the last of the three). The Wildcats are playing without their kicker, who was tied up until just a few minutes ago with a four-overtime soccer win over Caldwell County.

    ReplyDelete
  24. OK ... here we go ... Kyle Vannerson, a family name of great Heath sports heritage, forces a Trigg County fumble ... AND HEATH SCORES TWO PLAYS LATER!!! OUCH! Blocked extra point, and it's 20-20, with 9:36 to go in the third quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Van Vannerson was a senior on Heath's state-championship team of 1986, and another Vannerson played on the 1950s basketball team whose jerseys were displayed in the gym lobby. Not sure how Kyle Vannerson is related to those two, but ...

    ReplyDelete
  26. 6:08 to go in third, and Trigg County finds a kicker to come in, attempt and make an extra point after a touchdown run: 27-20.

    ReplyDelete
  27. VANNERSON ... interception ... and a Heath completion ... the Pirates are out to their own 38 ...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Heath had 17 players who started on offense, defense or both last season, and 11 graduated, the radio guys just reported.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Direct snap to Vannerson (who is not Heath's normal quarterback) on fourth-and-3 ... FIRST DOWN!

    ReplyDelete
  30. SHOOT! Interception for Trigg County, and the Wildcats will take over at the Trigg County 33 with 27 seconds to go in the third quarter.

    ReplyDelete
  31. OK, come on, Heath ... homecoming crowd ... seven-point deficit ... one quarter to go ... Trigg has a third-and-10 coming ... ONE TIME, BABY! ONE TIME!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Good job ... the Pirates force the punt.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Final: Ballard Memorial 74, Fulton County 24.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Boyle County 45 at West Jessamine 6, Breathitt County 20 at Powell County 6 ...

    ReplyDelete
  35. Crittenden County 48 vs. Fulton City 0
Highlands 27 vs. Covington Catholic 20
Murray 20 at Caldwell County 6
    Owensboro 7 at Hopkinsville 6

    ReplyDelete
  36. Those are all finals ... Trigg County driving, second and four from Heath 14 coming ...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Trinity (Louisville) 49 at Eastern 0

Heath sack for a loss of two ... third-and-six from the 16 ... radio reminds that Trigg County doesn't have a field-goal option ...

    ReplyDelete
  38. OK ... not sure what happened because Virginia needed a bit of attention, but Heath has back the ball ...

    ReplyDelete
  39. Five minutes to go ... fourth-and-five coming from the Heath 20 ...

    ReplyDelete
  40. 4:45 to go ... Trigg County takes over at its 35 ... If Heath loses this game, the Pirates will be the state's only Class 2A team to NOT advance to the playoffs.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Washington County 35 vs. Bardstown 21

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well, heck. Trigg County 27, Heath 20. I didn't get to hear the end of the game--had to help get Virginia to sleep. Oh, well. Go, Pirates.
