And so, today, we get the last game of the NCAA Baseball Championship between the Oklahoma Sooners and the North Carolina Tar Heels. Oklahoma won the first game of the final series, 9 to 3. But yesterday, North Carolina struck back for a 6-2 victory. So tonight will be the title decider.
As you can tell from the list above, it's been a disappointing season for teams in the Classic SEC. But it's been a pretty good year. Both the World Series and the NBA Playoffs were particularly good.
Lots of conversation today about Dusty May leaving Michigan to coach the Dallas Mavericks. Some people suggest that this development shows the problems with college hoops. But I remember back in the day when guys like Rick Pitino, P.J. Carlesimo, and John Calipari all left college hoops for the NBA. And I remember when Brad Stephens left Butler, and when Billy Donovan left Florida. So, I think this is just a thing that happens.
ReplyDeleteI would point out that there is still only one coach who has won the NCAA Title and the NBA Title, and that is Larry Brown. Given that Dusty May's Mavericks will be in the same conference as the Spurs and Thunder, I doubt if he will seriously challenge Brown's record.
ReplyDeleteFour coaches have won a college football championship and an NFL championship: Paul Brown (Ohio St.), Jimmy Johnson (Miami (Fla.)), Barry Switzer (Oklahoma), and Pete Carroll (U.S.C.)
ReplyDeleteOklahoma scores 2 runs in the top of the 2d to lead 2-0.
ReplyDeleteIn the bottom of the 2d, the Sooners get the third out by throwing out a runner at third just before a run would have crossed the plate. OU leads 2-0 after 2.
ReplyDeleteThis was a pretty big mistake by UNC. The Heels had runners on 1st and 2d with two outs, and a single was hit into right field. That should have scored the runner from 2d easily. But the runner on 1st tried to reach 3d, and he was gunned down before the runner on 2d could cross home plate. Inning over.

DeleteOU gets a one-out double and a two-out single to go up 3-0 after 2 1/2 innings.
ReplyDeleteUNC claws back one run in the bottom of the third. OU leads 3-1 after 3, and both teams are into the bullpen.
ReplyDeleteCarolina may be running out of pitching. They've used three pitchers to get through 3 1/3 innings. In the top of the 4th, two pitchers issued four consecutive walks to load the bases and bring in a run. When they finally threw a strike, a single brought in two more runs. OU leads 6-1 in the top of the 4th and the Sooners are still batting.
ReplyDeleteOU cannot pick up any more runs, and the Sooners lead 6-1 after 3 1/2.
ReplyDeleteOU leads 6-1 after 4.
ReplyDeleteOU hits a home run and leads 7-1 after 4 1/2.
