I'm watching Kentucky get crushed by Georgetown in Rupp Arena, and I just don't see how anyone could see a team with this little talent and think that team should be in the top 10.
I'm sure they'll play hard (or at least harder than they are playing tonight) and I'm sure Pope will coach them up. But to win 30 games, you need actual NBA-level talent, and Kentucky has none.
Unfortunately for Pope, Louisville is going to be good this year, and that's the one game folks in Lexington care about. They don't mind losing to Duke. They don't mind losing to Carolina. They certainly don't mind losing to Tennessee, Auburn, or Florida. But they hate losing to U of L. And there are going to be bad feelings the rest of the year after that game on November 11.
The Hoosiers come to Lexington on December 13. If Pope loses that game -- after losing to Louisville -- he will be in for a very long season. Fortunately for him, the Hoosiers are breaking in a new coach, so he may be able to survive that game.
Keep an eye on whether Vandy finishes ahead of UK in the SEC standings. That would be another Big Deal in Lexington. They don't mind losing to Tennessee, but they don't like falling behind Vandy.
I'm pretty sure that I've watched my last UK game of the year. I'm going to focus on just enjoying the season, and let the folks at Kentucky Sports Radio watch these guys. After all, this is what they wanted.

ReplyDeletePersonally, I'm rooting for U of L and Indiana to both make the Final Four this year. That's the only way I know to get Mitch Barnhart's attention.
ReplyDeleteIf Bobby Knight had been at Wisconsin, and Denny Crum had been at Southern Cal, Joe B. Hall could have coached for another ten years.

ReplyDeleteBut St. John's? At Arkansas? Two games against Florida? Two games against Tennessee? Gonzaga? Good luck with those games.

ReplyDeleteI hate losing. I'd rather have a car with holes in it than no car at all.
