I don't have any analysis yet -- I just wanted to see what the data looked like for now. There's a lot to think about here.
At catcher, I would give the edge to Will Smith over Steve Yeager.
ReplyDeleteAt first base, I think Freddie Freeman and Steve Garvey are basically equal, although Freeman has an edge in the field.
ReplyDeleteAt second base, Davey Lopes is clearly better than the 2025 committee the Dodgers have been using.
ReplyDeleteAt short, Mookie Betts is better than Bill Russell.
ReplyDeleteAt third, the WAR numbers for Ron Cey and Max Muncy are almost identical, but I think you have to give Cey the edge.
ReplyDeleteIn left, Dusty Baker is better than the 2025 collection.
ReplyDeleteIn center, Andy Pages has had a better year than Rick Monday did in 1977.
ReplyDeleteIn right, Reggie Smith is better than Teoscar Hernandez. But Shohei Ohtani is better than Reggie Smith.
ReplyDeleteThe 1977 Dodgers rarely used their bench. The 2025 Dodgers are much deeper, and are much more willing to keep switching guys until they find a hot hand.
ReplyDeleteIn 1977, with no DH, the Dodgers had a batting average of .266, a slugging average of .418, 191 home runs, and 769 runs scored. Their batting WAR was 26.8.
ReplyDeleteIn 2025, with a DH, the Dodgers had a batting average of .253, a slugging average of .441, 244 home runs, and 825 runs scored. Their batting WAR was 31.4.
In 1977, the Dodgers' pitching staff allowed 528 Earned Runs, and the team allowed 582 Total Runs. Their pitching WAR was 23.9.
ReplyDeleteIn 2025, the Dodgers' pitching staff allowed 633 Earned Runs, and the team allowed 683 Total Runs. Their pitching WAR was 10.6.
