Here (Reportedly) Is How Russellville High School Got Its Alma Mater

From Page 11 of Happy Years ... And Many More by Edward F. Coffman Jr.:

One day in the spring of 1937 our band director, Bill Lukes, told me that we needed to have an alma mater for our school. He asked me if I knew any, and I told him that the only one I knew was Vanderbilt’s. I knew the words quite well since I was already a Vanderbilt fan. He liked the words, and the tune was familiar. He thought that we should use it. We only changed two words, and so we sang, “Hail to thee our alma mater, Russellville, all hail.” To Vanderbilt, Bill Lukes and me, we owe our alma mater.

I enjoyed this 2012 book a great deal.

  1. Here are the projected Classic Bowl games based on the AP poll that came out today:

    (9) Vanderbilt goes to the Gator Bowl for a game with (15) Virginia.

  2. Upon further reflection, the Fiesta and Peach bowls should be changed:

Fiesta: (10) Brigham Young v. (12) Notre Dame
Peach: (7) Ole Miss v. (8) Georgia Tech

  3. The Steelers (4-2) and the Packers (4-1-1) is like comfort food for Sunday Night Football.

  4. Sadly, the Steelers and Packers are both wearing absurd uniforms. That's a shame.

  5. The Packers and Steelers are two of the oldest franchises in the NFL, but they have always been in different conferences, and so they have only played 37 times, including Super Bowl XLV. Green Bay leads the series 20-17.

  6. If press reports are accurate, LSU has joined Arkansas and Florida as the third SEC team to fire its football coach during the season. Personally, I don't see the advantage of firing your coach during the season, but maybe I'm missing something.

  7. If you're Lane Kiffin, and you're getting major offers to leave Ole Miss, you have to look at Brian Kelly and see what it's like to move from a school that loves you to one that's just paying you.

  8. I've synched up the Westwood One broadcast for the Steelers and Packers with the NBC footage. First time I've done that this season, but the NFL is starting to get serious.

  9. At halftime, the Steelers were up 16-7 and looking pretty good, but in the second half, Green Bay administered an old-school beatdown in Pittsburgh. The Pack wins 35-25.
