Oh, Kentucky

Turning to sports, the Kentucky High School Athletic Association boys' basketball state tournament got going yesterday. This and the girls' tournament have turned into an annual exercise in fun with Google Maps for me. Seriously, I'm not denying all of the privacy, surveillance, security fears that Google Maps casts light on, but--man, oh, man--is it ever fun to be able to draw maps of the routes between two competing high schools to Rupp Arena!

I got a late start on doing these yesterday, and, by the time I did, Saint Matthews Trinity had already swamped over Paintsville Johnson Central, 70-28. Jason Frakes with The Courier-Journal seems pretty convinced that this tournament is going to end up Trinity against Scott County, and Jason certainly knows what he’s talking about. And this would be my best guess, anyway, and I know almost nothing about what I'm talking about. But, whatever, Wednesday and Thursday is no time to be get all no fun and smart about foregone conclusions at the Sweet Sixteen.

Wednesday’s other winners were Walton-Verona, 76-54, over Knox Central; Campbell County, 61-60 over Elizabethtown John Hardin, and Ashland Paul Blazer, 58-50, over Owensboro. John Hardin was undefeated, and that game apparently came down to a deal where the coach had called a timeout right before his own player hit what would’ve been a game-winning shot. And I read that Owensboro had been several points ahead in its game before losing. (Like I said, I know next to nothing about what’s going on.)

So, today, we have Louisville Butler vs. Perry County Central at 11 a.m. Central, …

… Covington Catholic vs. Scott County at 12:30 p.m., …

… Madisonville-North Hopkins vs. Lincoln County at 5:30 (GO! BIG! M!) …

… and Warren Central vs. Mayfield at 7 p.m. ...

Here's where you can get links to everything official at the KHSAA. Have fun. Comments flow!

Oh, Kentucky

Some overnight updates to last night's "Ah, Footbah" coverage: 2A-state-champ Fort Campbell's winning streak is over ... Larry A. Ryle, the state's highest-ranked 6A team in action last night, socked 5A-power Covington Catholic, 61-7, in Cincinnati ... Three of 5A's top teams--Bowling Green, Christian County and Warren Central--play today in the Rafferty's Bowl at WKU ... Another win for Coach Haskins in La Center--Lone Oak 49 at Ballard Memorial 27 ... The top seven teams in the Herald-Leader's 3A rankings were in action last night, and the only winner among them was Somerset, 42-6 vs. Lynn Camp ... Danville was 5-7 last season, but it's likely headed to leap from third to the top of the 2A poll with the Admirals' win over Mason County and losses by No. 1 Fort Campbell and No. 2 Louisville DeSales ... Crittenden County, kicking off the 25th anniversary of its state title, beat Hopkins County Central in Morton's Gap last night.

The Dolphins have an exhibition game at Jacksonville tonight. Chris Perkins of the South Florida Sun Sentinel wrote this week that he thinks the former Fort Campbell HS Falcon and UK Wildcat is in competition with veterans Tim Dobbins and J.D. Folsom for two reserve inside-linebacker positions. In the Miami Herald, David J. Neal wrote, "Two things you might sleep on with rookie free agent linebacker Micah Johnson: his pass-coverage ability and his mobility."

Less-bad jobs news from Louisville.

“He was an icon to Shively and to Butler," Shively mayor Sherry Conner told The Courier-Journal's Paula Burba.

The highest-paid of the 673 people on the Harrison County School District's 2010 payroll is the superintendent, who made $111,269.04, reports Becky Barnes in The Cynthiana Democrat.

Kentucky's libraries are getting $1.3 million in federal funds, plus a matching $1.3 million from the Gates Foundation, for computers and training courses, reports Business First in Louisville.

What if the mail didn't come today?
