Kentucky high-school football, Week 3

Things got rolling in Kentucky high-school football Thursday night, with Lone Oak--the No. 8 team in the Associated Press Class 4A poll--ripping Marshall County, in Draffenville, 52-7; Reidland holding off visiting Fulton County, 21-18, and Union Larry A. Ryle being blanked, 35-0, by Colerain (Ohio).

Meanwhile, waaaaaaaaaay over in Salyersville, seat of the state's county with the state's highest unemployment rate, the big story was that the hometown Magoffin County High Hornets got on the field at all. "The football team itself is almost a microcosm of the community. We were knocked down. We battled back, and we're now going to play here."

And then they went out and won: 46-12 over Paintsville.

Here are the games that most interest me from the rest of this weekend's schedule:

Horse Cave Caverna at West Paducah Heath--Wrote Scott Wilson in the Glasgow Daily Times on Wednesday: "The Caverna High School football season is a long journey to the top with some pretty big obstacles standing in the way. The Colonels will run into their biggest obstacle of the season this week when they travel to Paducah on Friday night to face Heath High School." Both Caverna and Heath are 0-2; Caverna hasn't yet scored this season.

Paducah Tilghman (AP 3A No. 3) at Mayfield (AP A No. 1)--Ninety-ninth meeting.

Louisville Saint Xavier (AP 6A No. 2) at Bowling Green (AP 5A No. 1)--After Louisville Trinity (27 straight) and Fort Thomas Highlands (22), Bowling Green has the state's longest winning streak: 17 games, including 28-20 at St. X last season.

Elizabethtown John Hardin (AP 5A No. 2) at Meade County--The visiting Bulldogs received one vote for No. 1 in their class (No. 1 Bowling Green got all 11 others), but Chuck Jones points out back in the hometown paper that 2-0 starts are nothing new for John Hardin and that both of the team's foes so far are 0-2.

Danville (AP 2A No. 7) at Boyle County (AP 4A No. 3)

Bowling Green Warren Central (AP 5A No. 3) at Fort Campbell (AP 3A No. 5T)--The home-standing Falcons received one of the 12 votes for No. 1 in Class 3A. No. 1 Louisville Central received 10, and No. 2 Belfry received the other. "Warren Central is a tough team and our Falcons need your support tonight. C'mon out to Fryar Stadium and let them hear your Falcon Pride!!!!!"

Henderson County (AP 6A No. 10) at Christian County (AP 5A No. 6)--Advantage Christians over Hens in recent Clashes of Cols.

Murray (AP 2A No. 5) at Graves County--The home crowd might be a little lively.

Boone County at Union Randall K. Cooper (AP 5A No. 5)--The home-standing Jaguars are 2-0, having beaten two teams that they had never previously beaten.

Crestwood South Oldham at Hebron Estates North Bullitt (AP 5A No. 8)--Yes, Hebron Estates. Per Wikipedia: "North Bullitt High School is a school located in Hebron Estates, Kentucky, a small city served by the post office of nearby Shepherdsville. Opened in 1975, it is part of the Bullitt County Public Schools district." And the fight song ...

Grayson County at Edmonson County--"Coach, tonight we have our home-opener. It's the Tobacco Stick Bowl against Grayson County. I know how you and your staff coach; it's just another game for you guys, and you try to get that across to the kids. But this is Grayson County. ..."

Anderson County at Shelby County--Big rivalry, but not so much in football.

Williamsburg (AP A No. 6) vs. Pineville and Middlesboro at Bell County (AP 3A No. 5T) in the City/County Bowl on Log Mountain--Home-standing County will be forced to start a freshman at quarterback.

Erlanger Lloyd Memorial at Garrard County (AP 3A No. 10)--Freshman quarterback for the home-standing Golden Lions, too, against the 2-0 Juggernauts?

Prestonsburg (AP 2A No. 10) at Lawrence County--The visiting Blackcats, who finished 5-6 in 2011, are 2-0 after overcoming two-touchdown deficits in each of their first two games (both in Prestonsburg).
