8 Teams Left

The late game last night featured an upset, with Campbell Co. (who already upset George Rogers Clark in the Tenth Region beating Number-3 Newport 43 to 40.  This will not improve the mood of folks in the Ninth Region, who were already complaining about having to play on Thursday for eight years in a row.

So that sets up today's quarter-finals, each of which features at least one ranked team:

Magoffin Co. v. (1) Great Crossing (10 A.M. Central)
(7) Lyon Co. v. Adair Co. (12:30 P.M. Central)
(9) Harlan Co. v. Campbell Co. (5 P.M. Central)
(5) Lou. Trinity v. (11) Lou. Evangel Christian (7:30 P.M. Central)

Five of the quarterfinalists were ranked in the MaxPreps top 20, which strikes me as a very impressive job of ranking, especially given the fact that the KHSAA doesn't seed its tournament.

  1. After very tough games with Lexington Catholic and Spencer County, Great Crossing finally catches a break. They are crushing Magoffin County 71 to 37 with 2:26 left in the third quarter. They were up 31-8 after the first quarter. Micah Moreno had 16 points and 15 rebounds in only 19 minutes, and he's finished for the day.

  3. Lyon County rolls, 80 to 65 over Adair Co. For the first time since 2013, the Second Region Champion is in the semi-finals. Tomorrow at 10 A.M. Central, the Lyons will play the Number One Team in the State.

  4. Harlan County trailed pretty much the whole game -- they were down 16 points at one point -- but a combination of their full court press and 42 points from Trent Noah allowed them to catch up. Campbell County and Harlan County are tied at 69 apiece, and they are heading for overtime.

  5. With one quarter to go, Campbell County was up 55-44. At that point, the Camels were riding a 13-game winning streak that included wins over (10) George Rogers Clark and (3) Newport, and they were only eight minutes from the Semi-Final. But in the fourth quarter, Harlan County outscored them 25-14, in large part due to a historic performance from Trent Noah. And in the overtime, Harlan County outscored Campbell County 16 to 2. So here is your final:

    (9) Harlan Co. 85 - 71 Campbell Co. (OT)

  6. Here was Noah's game:
    9-13 from 2-point range
    7-10 from 3-point range
    9-9 from the line
    48 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists

Noah is the third all-time scoring leader in KHSAA history. Travis Perry is first. Tomorrow they will both play in the semi-final of the greatest high school tournament that there is.

  7. For the record, Noah has a scholarship to South Carolina.

  9. Here's the live stream of 95.7 FM WCCK for this morning's semifinal. That station is based in Calvert City, and I'm pretty sure they'll have local broadcasters (as opposed to the KHSAA broadcasters).
