NFL Week 18

Going into the last week of the season, it looks as though Baltimore will finish with the Number One ranking.  Here's the Top Ten:

1.  Baltimore:  13-3
2.  San Francisco:  12-4
3.  Dallas:  11-5
4.  Detroit:  11-5
5.  Buffalo:  10-6
6.  Miami:  11-5
7.  Cleveland:  11-5
8.  Philadelphia:  11-5
9.  Kansas City:  10-6
10.  Los Angeles:  9-7

This weekend, for the last weekend of the regular season, every team is playing a Divisional Game.  I don't really like this idea very much -- I'd rather have more Divisional Games throughout the regular season, instead of sixteen Divisional Games in a weekend where so many games are meaningless.  Take, for example, Dallas's trip to Washington.  If this game had been played in September -- or even October -- it would have been the biggest event of the sports year in Washington.  But now, almost no one around here cares.  And that's true for a lot of the games that will be played this weekend.

But there will be some good games.  The Game of the Week is the last game of the Regular Season -- the Bills and the Dolphins from Miami on Sunday Night.  The 49ers are hosting the Rams at 3:25 P.M. Central on Sunday, and that could be a huge game for Los Angeles.  And there's always the question of who gets the last few playoff spots.

It hasn't been an unusually great NFL season -- there have been too many injured quarterbacks, and the quality of play outside of Baltimore and San Francisco has been quite mediocre.  But Sundays with the NFL are almost always better than Sundays without, and I'm sorry to see it come to an end.

  1. Me, too!

I'm scared to death of tonight's Dolphins-Bills game. It's a good thing for all of us Miami fans that I don't work in any capacity for the team.

  7. When the Jaguars hosted Cincinnati on December 4, they were 8-3 and cruising to the playoffs. They lost that game in overtime, and then pretty much fell apart. Today they were beaten in Nashville by the Titans, and now their season is over.

  10. Honestly, I'm sort of happy for everyone in the NFL who gets to go home after today and take a few months off.

  17. The old clock on the wall is ticking away the regular season:

    Green Bay 17 - 6 Chicago (4th)
    Oakland 24 - 7 Denver (4th)
    N.Y. Giants 24 - 3 Philadelphia (4th)
    Arizona 13 - 13 Seattle (4th)
    San Diego 9 - 10 Kansas City (4th)
    San Francisco 20 - 13 Los Angeles (4th)
    Washington 10 - 35 Dallas (4th)

Looks like Washington is going to hang on to the Number Two pick in the draft. The last time they had that pick they skipped Tua in order to draft Chase Young.

  19. Here are the records for Washington's last six coaches:

Rivera: 26-40-1 (winning percentage of 39.3 percent)
    Gruden: 35-49-1 (41.8 percent)
    Shanahan: 24-40 (37.5 percent)
    Zorn: 12-20 (37.5 percent)

More evidence that Joe Gibbs is one of the greatest coaches who ever lived.
