  1. On Twitter, someone suggested that abandoned malls should be repurposed as retirement homes for Gen Xers, and I thought that was a pretty good idea.

    1. I often dream that I'm living in a mall.

    2. I could also retire to a 1980's style high school, with a library, a cafeteria, sports fields, and a gym. Actually, if there were a big campus with a high school, some restaurants, a bookstore, and a mall, I'd be really happy.

  2. Be grateful for the KHSAA. In Virginia, the John Marshall Justices, of Richmond, are tearing their way through the season. They are undefeated, and MaxPreps says they are the best team in the state -- even above the private schools. But John Marshall has less than 500 students, so they are stuck in Class 2 (of 6). In the Class 2 quarterfinals, they beat Strasburg 98-27. In the Class 2 semi-finals, they beat Brunswick 112-49. Presumably they will crush Radford in the final and be "state champions," but they deserve so much more.

    1. John Marshall won the Class 2 championship with a 91-34 win over Radford. What a shame they didn't have a chance a real state championship.

  3. Alabama's men's basketball team is really good. If you look at their statistics in the SEC, and compare them to every Kentucky team going back to 2002, the only Kentucky teams that look better on paper are the ones from 2003, 2012, and 2015.

  4. There's an old mall on Nashville Road in Bowling Green that had fallen out of favor in the 1990s, and it had a $1 movie theater that Rob and I would frequent. Most of the stores were empty, and I'm pretty sure we actually got as far as calling the for-lease number to talk about the possibility of our renting one for our apartment. We thought it was so funny to imagine people walking by to go to the movies when we were sitting in there watching TV or whatever.

  5. OK, in Friday’s earlies, Sacred Heart heart beat OCath (thanks for that tip, GoHeath; I like Frakes’s version better than mine), and GRC beat North Laurel. I drove from Madisonville to Marion yesterday to have lunch with Matthew, which was glorious, and I got to listen to parts of these games as I traveled. It was a beautiful day in western Kentucky, and I took a little different route than I typically do out of Marion for the way home. I’ve got to get out a map and see what highways I was on, but at one point I ran this ridge along a seam in the knobby Crittenden/Webster country below Providence, and it was gorgeous!

  6. Then, after I got back to Madisonville, it was time to meet people at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) to set up for West Area Workshops, which takes place today. People from the 40 or so Disciples churches (or not) in the old 502 area code get together for a day of worship and workshops on churchychurch topics such as “How the Church Can Support Those Grieving Someone They Love," "Familiar Bible Stories: Comfort or Temptation?," "Ministry for Dementia Patients and Their Caregivers," "Technology in Worship” and “The Trauma-Informed Church: Ministry in Challenging Times.” I'm so excited! I'm doubly proud about this event, actually. One, it's at First Christian Madisonville, one of my home congregations; two, it's all been organized by my wife, who is West Area regional minister.

  7. So, as I was tearing down tables in some rooms, putting up tables in others, scrubbing toilets and whiteboards, etc., I listened to the first of the evening Sweet Sixteen games on my phone. As I'm sure you all know by now, our beloved Lady Mustangs went ahead, fell behind, went way ahead and then held on to prevail!

    MCCRACKEN COUNTY 51
    ASHLAND BLAZER 47

I really enjoy listening to Eric Chumbler call these games on WPAD with whoever his partner has to be. That person was different yesterday from the person who did it Thursday. Anyway, they do a great job. I especially love hearing all of the different shoutouts from other people who are listening. Chumbler noted that 51 classrooms from McCracken County High; Heath, Lone Oak and Reidland middle schools, and the various feeder elementaries called/texted in during the broadcast Thursday. Also, they do a trivia game each second half where you text in your answer for a chance to win a free entrée from Rafferty's. Both days, I've had the answer right, but neither time was I quick enough on the draw. Last night, I lost out to the first-ever girls' basketball coach at McCracken County High.

Anyway, the Lady Mustangs won, and we left church with the place looking great for today. And then we came home and picked up our daughter to go through both the Burger King and Taco Bell drivethroughs to celebrate our daughter's totally smashing a big science test yesterday. It was delicious.

  8. In the last game Friday, Henderson County beat Mercy, 63-59, and I was happy about this result, too. It was Henderson's WSON on which I listened to much of the early games through Webster and Crittenden counties, and it has been among my absolute favorite radio stations in the world for some years. Plus, I lived in Henderson and worked for the Gleaner a little bit.

Well, that's true for Louisville, too, but, whatever, I'm happy for Henderson County.

I didn't listen to much of this game, as I was paying more attention to ...

    -- the Wizards losing (again) to the Hawks (argh!);

-- the WKU Lady Toppers whipping Texas-San Antonio in the Conf-USA semifinals (hurrah!), and

-- UK getting ready to lose to Vandy in the SEC men's tournament (I was very happy for you, GoHeath!).

So, that brings us to Saturday ...

    1. Vandy's basketball team was like one of those guys in a melodrama who's just out for revenge. Once the Dores had beaten UK for the second time in nine days, their mission was complete. They barely even showed up for the semi-finals on Saturday, and were blown out before halftime.

    2. But Vandy beat UK in football, and went 2-1 against the Cats in basketball, and that all counts as a Big Year for Vanderbilt.
