  3. Purdue beats Villanova 80-74 to capture whatever that tournament is in at the Mohegun Sun casino in Connecticut. Yesterday Purdue beat North Carolina. Down through the years, the ACC and Big East teams have given Purdue all sorts of trouble, so these were two impressive wins.

  4. Here's Purdue under Matt Painter:

In 2009, they went to the Sweet 16 and lost to UConn 72-60.
In 2010, they went to the Sweet 16 and lost to Duke 70-57.
In 2011, they were a number-3 seed and lost 94-76 to VCU in the second round.

Then they went off and spent several years rebuilding.

In 2016, they were a number-5 seed and lost 85-83 to Arkansas-Little Rock in double OT in the first round.
In 2017, they went to the Sweet 16 and lost 98-66 to Kansas.
In 2018, they went to the Sweet 16 and lost 78-65 to Texas Tech.
In 2019, they went to the Sweet 16 and beat Tennessee 99-94 in OT. Then they lost a heartbreaker to Virginia 80-75 in OT in the Elite Eight. (That 2019 Tournament was a cracker.)

So 2019 was the first time that Painter's teams played well against elite competition. It will be interesting to see if they can keep this up.

  5. In the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, Purdue had a combined record of 13-23 in Big 10 play under Painter. Ken Pom had them at number 73 in 2013 and 93 in 2014. But Purdue didn't fire Painter. Now here they are again. Remember this fact when you see all the SEC football teams engaging in their typical panic-firing this year.

  6. Latest scores:

    Buffalo 7 - 38 Indianapolis (3d)
    Carolina 14 - 21 Washington (4th)
    Chicago 7 - 6 Buffalo (4th)
    Cleveland 13 - 7 Detroit (3d)
    Jacksonville 3 - 27 San Francisco (4th)
    Minnesota 23 - 17 Green Bay (4th)
    N.Y. Jets 14 - 14 Miami (3d)
    Philadelphia 30 - 7 New Orleans (3d)
    Tennessee 6 - 19 Houston (4th)

These scores seem to be extremely random. I feel like we may as well settle in for a Tampa Bay/New England Super Bowl, because none of the other teams can be trusted.

  12. With 6:38 to play in the first half at New York, the Dolphins are Jets are tied at 7. The Jets just downed a punt to the Miami 8. At the moment, ESPN says the Dolphins’ “WIN %” is 53.6.

An offensive pass interference penalty hoses the Dolphins’ possession, and then the Jets return a putn to the New York 48. Now the WIN % has flopped to the Jets’ favor, at 52.0. There’s 4:07 to play in the first half.

Joe Flacco runs for two yards to convert a thir down, and now the Jets have the ball at the Miami 41. We’re at the 2-minute warning, and New York's win percentage is up to 54.5.

    Joe Flacco!

After a run for no gain and an incomplete pass, the Jets now face fourth-and-5 from the Miami 36 with 1:15 to go in the half. Now Miami’s win percentage is 53.5.

And then the Jets miss a field goal. Miami takes over at its 45, and now the Jets have the favorable win percentage of 52.8. Weird. I don’t understand that one.

Tua Tagovailoa throws for seven to Jaylen Waddle to the New York 48, and the Dolphins’ win percentage SOARS to 59.6. GO, DOLPHINS! Timeout, Miami: 1:02.

  14. Jets get second-half-opening kickoff and drive to New York 38. But their drive stalls, and then they get a delay-of-game penalty on a field-goal try, so they punt. Dolphins have first-and-10 from the Miami 10 coming, and the win percentage is back with the Dolphins: 53.6.

After at least the second Miami offensive pass interference negating what would’ve been first-down pickups, Gaskin runs for 20 and then nine yards. THEN TUA COMPLETES TO MACK HOLLINS FOR 65 YARDS AND A TOUCHDOWN!!! SANDERS MAKES THE EXTRA POINT! IT’S 14-7, DOPHINS, WITH 9:06 TO PLAY IN THE THIRD QUARTER, AND THE WIN % IS 75.6 IN FAVOR OF MIAMI!!!

  16. The Dolphins have won their last three games with the Jets, to bring the all-time series record to 55-55-1.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The Dolphins have won three in a row and are now 4-7 on the season. As bad as Miami has been this century, it has been unusual for the Dolphins to NOT have at least a three-game win streak. That happened in six seasons: 2019, 2015, 2010, 2009, 2007 and 2004.

There also have been only six seasons since 2001 that the Dolphins have won at least four games in a row: 2020, 2016, 2008, 2006, 2005 and 2003.

Miami is scheduled to host the Carolina Panthers at noon Central next Sunday (Nov. 28).
