MLB Update

I haven't been posting about MLB so far, because the regular season is basically meaningless at this point.  But here's what it looks like with about six weeks left:

In the National League, the three best teams are the Giants, Dodgers, and Padres.  All three of those teams will probably make the playoffs.  The two teams that don't win the division will have a one-game playoff.  Whoever wins that playoff will probably meet the division winner in the NLCS.  Right now, the Giants have a four-game lead on the Dodgers, so they have the advantage.

In the American League, Tony LaRussa has turned the White Sox into a power, and they will win the Central.  The Astros will win the West.  The Rays are the best team in the East, but Boston (and the Yankees) still have a chance.  The A's may get a Wild Card.  The White Sox, the Astros, the Rays, and the Red Sox all have decent chances to win the pennant.  The Astros are the best team, but their manager -- the immortal Dusty Baker -- has a long history of losing in the playoffs.

That's pretty much everything you need to know for now.

  1. They're still doing the ghost runners in extra innings, and they're still playing seven-inning doubleheaders.

  2. I think the Field of Dreams game went well. Since the regular season doesn't mean much any more, MLB should probably do more things like this. Play regular season games all over the country, in lots of unique venues. Go to Mexico. Go to the Dominican Republic. And get rid of the ghost runners and the seven-inning games. If people pay to see a major league game, you owe them a major league game.

  3. The Rockies are 38-21 at home, and 14-44 on the road. That team never should have been allowed into MLB.
