College Baseball

The NCAA announced its field for the baseball tournament today.  Here are the top 16 seeds.

1.  Arkansas (46-10)
2.  Texas (42-15)
3.  Tennessee (45-16)
4.  Vanderbilt (40-15)
5.  Arizona (40-15)
6.  Texas Christian (40-17)
7.  Mississippi St. (40-15)
8.  Texas Tech (36-15)
9.  Stanford (33-14)
10.  Notre Dame (30-11)
11.  Old Dominion (42-14)
12.  Mississippi (41-19)
13.  E. Carolina (41-15)
14.  Oregon (37-14)
15.  Florida (38-20)
16.  Louisiana Tech (40-18)

Each of the top 16 seeds will host a regional except for Old Dominion, which did not bid to host.  ODU will be the number one seed in the Columbia Region, played at Columbia, S. Carolina.  It's the first time since 2010 that a number-one seed is not a regional host.

No team from Kentucky made the tournament.  U of L misses the tournament for the first time since 2011.  This is the first time since 1997-98 when U of L hasn't gone to the post-season in football, basketball, or baseball.

  1. Paducah Tilghman, who was number 12 in the state, loses 6-2 to St. Mary's in the district semi-finals, and their season is suddenly over. St. Mary's and McCracken County will advance to regionals.

  2. Here's a tweet from Adam Wells: "McCracken County vs. St. Mary was delayed by a few minutes after a heated exchange between Tilghman and McCracken coaches. Tempers very high here at Brooks Stadium."

  3. One of the biggest problems that the East Coast has in dealing with the South -- and especially the Upper South -- is that they have no idea how to figure out how angry we are at any moment in history. Anger just isn't nearly as important on the East Coast as it is in the Upper South.

  4. It's not that the folks here don't get angry -- they often get really angry. But they tend to see anger as a moral failing, rather than a motivator or something that helps you get at the truth of things.

  5. Anyway, I would love to know what Tilghman's coach is so angry about. Based on the tweet above, it must be one of those things that everyone in Paducah knows about, but that the press isn't going to report.
