Marshall County reached the final of the KHSAA Girls' State Tournament -- the first time any team from the First Region has made it that far since Marshall County won it all in 1984. Here's how they got there:
April 8: Marshall Co. 56, Pikeville 52
April 9: Marshall Co. 58, Bethlehem 51
April 10: Marshall Co. 50, Henderson Co. 33
That put the Lady Marshals in the final against long-time power Sacred Heart Academy. With about 2 minutes to go, the Lady Marshals led 47-44, but Sacred Heart pulled out a 49-47 victory. On one of the last plays of the game, with Marshall Co. down two, the Lady Marshals tried inbounding the ball -- only to have a Sacred Heart player crash into the Marshall Co. player trying to catch the ball. It was an obvious foul, but it wasn't called, and that play will be remembered in Benton for a long time.
