Album Review: Careful by Boy Harsher

This is the most I've enjoyed an album in a few years. That being said it really doesn't hold up over the whole 10 tracks, would have been better as an 8 track album. This band is very much about their aesthetic, and I think they simply ran out of steam down the line with this album. Coming up with 10 solid songs is very difficult.

Still that being said this album hits all the hot spots for me. It's dark and brooding which I very much like in a pop album, especially when every day here where I live is more snow and no sun. It feels youthful and indulgent in its joy of misery, something that I totally appreciate. This would be a brilliant album to put on while you walk around, name the place, on a cold wet night and think of the miseries in your own life or the world, depending on your mood.

I will say that the key to this band is that they are a band. Without the brilliant production being done by Augustus Muller, Jae Matthews would fall flat. She is an interesting vocalist, but Muller is doing amazing things with the soundscape behind her. He's pulling from post punk, from mid 80's pop like A-Ha, shoegaze bands, and blending it all together to feel very 2019. Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good. I'll be interested to see where they go from here.
