1913 World Series Game 1 (BBPRO98 Simulation)

Back in 1998 or so I began replaying the history of Major League Baseball, starting with the 1903 season. Using career stats I added all the players into their current teams in 1903 and played out the season. When it was time for the draft, I had them draft in the players who made their first appearance in 1904 and let them go where may. This meant that my history and real history went away from one another. In the draft I also included any Negro League players where I was able to get stats. I knew those stats would get better with time and that at some point I would have a truly integrated league. Sad to say I ran out of steam on playing my simulations but I did get through a number of seasons.

In 1913 I got the bright idea that I should keep a record of the world series games. This is the play by play for game 1 of my 1913 world series. I guess we will see how good a job I did of keeping score of the game. I'll include information about the players as we go along.

I should note that at one point I had a web site with all the stats from these simulations.  Sad to say somewhere along the way I lost the database I had.  It may be backed up somewhere, but at this point I'm not sure where.  The computer I was playing on is still working but the screen is barely visible, it's over 20 years old.  Too bad this game like so many other good games died away.

I did manage to find a backup of the statistic files for each year I simulated.  Here is some information from the 1913 season.

Pittsburgh at Detroit for Game 1 of the 1913 World Series

Pitching for Detroit Ed Reulbach
Sad to say I didn't write down any pitching stats for Reulbach on the season. In real life Reulbach came into the League in 1905 with the Chicago Cubs. Over 13 years he had a lifetime 2.28 ERA, that ranks 18th best in MLB history.

2b, Frank O'Rourke leads things off for Pittsburgh and grounds back to the pitcher.
CF, George Burns hits second and grounds out to first.
This brings up the Catcher Jimmy Archer who hit .351 on the year, he singles to left.

In real life Jimmy Archer came into the League in 1904 with Pittsburgh, but he didn't stick.  He came back in 1907 with Detroit and then again in 1909 with the Cubs.  This time he stayed and played in the League until 1918.  He had a lifetime average of .249 and was a solid defensive catcher.

With Archer on 1st, SS Joe Cassidy hit into a 4-3 ground out to end the top of the first.

Pitching for Pittsburgh Ed Walsh.
Walsh is the career ERA leader at 1.82 over a 14 year career.  He was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.  Walsh came into the League in 1904 and played 13 of his 14 years for the White Sox.  In real life he and Reulbach both pitched in the 1906 world series.  In 1908 he won 40 games.

3b, Buck Weaver leads things off for Detroit and he flies to left.
LF, Larry Doyle is next and he grounds out to 3rd.
1b, Jake Stahl comes up next and he singles up the middle.

In real life Jake Stahl played his last season in 1913 and was a lifetime .261 hitter.

With Stahl on 1st, 2b Eddie Collins grounded out to first. Thus ending the first inning.

Pittsburgh 0 at Detroit 0 after 1 inning

1b, Smoky Joe Wood leads things off for the Pirates in the top of the second and opens with a double to right.

In real life Smoky Joe Wood was a pitcher who came into the League in 1908, went 34-5 in 1912 and was out of the League after the 1915 season.  He would pitch a few more oddball games in his career, but his career is famous for burning out so quickly after being so great.  I must say I don't recall why in this game he is a position player instead of a pitcher.  When you put in all the stats the game makes decisions on what position a player will play and Wood was a good enough hitter that the game decided to make him a position player instead of a pitcher.

RF, Hy Myers flew to center
LF, Cy Williams grounded to first and Wood advanced to 3rd
3b, John Dodge would come up with two out and a man on third, but would fly out to left to end the top of the 2nd.

LF, Dutch Zwilling would lead things off for Detroit in the 3rd and would ground to short.
C, Roger Bresnahan grounded back to the pitcher.
CF, Harry Hooper grounded to first to end the 2nd inning.

Pittsburgh 0 at Detroit 0 after 2 innings

P, Ed Walsh opens up the 3rd inning with ground out to the pitcher.
Back to the top of the order and 2b, Frank O'Rourke who hits an 0-2 pitch over the right field fence for the first run of the game.

In real life Frank O'Rourke came into the League in 1912 with the Boston Braves.  He would not stick though and didn't get back until 1917 with Brooklyn.  He would go on to have a .254 career batting average and play for 14 years.

CF, George Burns is up next and he singles to center.
This brings up C, Jimmy Archer who hits into a 3-6-3 double play to end the top of the 2nd.

SS, Donie Bush leads it off for Detroit and singles to right
P, Ed Reulbach flies out to center
3b, Buck Weaver flies out to right

1b, Joe Wood then grounds into a 1-4-3 double play

To start off the bottom of the 6th P, Fred Sherry strikes out

RF, Larry Doyle flies out to center

Pittsburgh 2 at Detroit 0 after 6 innings

RF, Hy Myers flies out to left
LF, Cy Williams hits a HR to right-center to give Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead.

Cy Williams came in to the League in 1912 in real life with the Chicago Cubs.  He would put together a 19 year career with a lifetime .292 average.  In 1916, 1920, 1923, and 1927 he would lead the National League in homers.
