Album Review: Froot by Marina and the Diamonds

I have to say this album grabbed me from the moment I first put it on. And unlike The Balcony by Catfish and the Bottlemen, this album did get under my skin. Going to take a shower I wanted to throw it on. Wake up in the morning and a song from the album is stuck in my head. Found myself repeating a song multiple times. That's how you distinguish a 2 star album from a 3 star album.

What is it about this album? I like the sound quite a bit, really like Marina's voice, and lyrically it's interesting. Two songs in particular stand out for me as particularly interesting. The opening track "Happy" and the closing track "Immortal."  "Happy" could find its way onto a Christian pop album because of it's lyric.

Couldn't relax, couldn't sit back
And let the sunlight in my lap
I sang a hymn to bring me peace
And then it came, a melody

It felt so sweet, it felt so strong
It made me feel like I belonged
And all the sadness inside me
Melted away like I was free

I found what I'd been looking for in myself
Found a life worth living for someone else
Never thought that I could be, I could be
Happy, happy . . .
The album has songs about love and loss and other things, but even those have an interest take.  But "Immortal" is a very interesting love song to me.

I'm forever chasing after time
But everybody dies, dies
If I could buy forever at a price
I would buy it twice, twice
But if the earth ends in fire
And the seas are frozen in time
There'll be just one survivor
The memory that I was yours
And you were mine
Everybody dies, dies
Chasing after time, time

Anyhow I really enjoyed this album and will be said to take it off my queue.   Following the Rhapsody rating method I give it 3 out of 5 stars for Pretty Good.

In fact I'll give a bonus video for this album, since I talked about the song.

  1. This is very great stuff. Love that lyric on "Happy." Also, I really appreciated your distinction on what separates 2-star from 3-star records--would appreciate more of that for each score.
