The Freakin' Weekend (1969)

OK, we'll take a closer look at all of this starting tomorrow 1969 (Friday, Oct. 24).

Incidentally, the Oct. 26, 1969, American 500 in Rockingham, N.C., apparently was not on TV, but this movie is fantastic.

  1. I've never been much for B.B. King, but this is terrific, from ABC's new Music Scene program. "Just a Little Love" is No. 100 in this week's Cash Box rankings.

  2. 1s in the AP Kentucky high-school football polls remain Tompkinsville in Class A, Tilghman in 2A and St. Xavier in 3A. Big game in the state this week is 6-0 Tilghman at 7-0 Madisonville (No. 2 in 2A). 3A had a 1-vs.-2 matchup a couple of weeks ago, and St. X beat Trinity.

    1. I'm going to Madisonville for this game.

    2. "Maroons win region's feature," in the Saturday, Oct. 25, 1969, Kentucky New Era:

It didn't count in the standings, but it must be said the Madisonville Maroons won the big one in Western Kentucky's First Region football competition last night. ...

    3. The Maroons of District 2 chalked up a 26-12 decision over Paducah Tilghman of District 1 in a battle of unbeaten clubs at Madisonville. Madisonville took the verdict for a very simple reason. It did a better job of stopping Tilghman's fine passing game than the Tornado did of checking Alfred Collins.

The remarkable sophomore back for the Maroons tallied all four of his team's touchdowns while rushing for 155 yards on 36 carries. The winners led 13-0 at intermission and ran the lead to 19-0 before Tilghman got on the scoreboard. ...

The duel of unbeatens at Madisonville saw the 180-pound Collins at his running best. His punt and kickoff returns spelled trouble for Tilghman all night.

Paducah scored both its touchdowns on passes as quarterback Ron Kelley hit on 10 of 20 aerials for 178 yards. The Tornado running game was completely stymied. Madisonville rushed for 225 yards and passed for 21 more yards. ...

    4. The teams may clash again in the November playoffs but this is by no means assured. Madisonville still has to get by Daviess County in District 2 and Tilghman must turn back Mayfield in District 1. Neither assignment is going to be easy for those wanting a Maroon-Tornado rematch.

  3. Key game in Class A this week is Trigg County and Russellville. There are all sorts of ways things could play out here, but, with Trigg's upset win at Murray a couple of weeks ago, one of the scenarios could have Ken Barrett's Wildcats surprisingly advancing to the playoffs. "The prospect goes down the drain, however, if Trigg doesn't defeat Russellville Friday," Cecil Herndon wrote in the Kentucky New Era. "The Wildcats will be outsized. Russellville is a big ball club and well thought of among the state's Class A powers. The Panthers have been beaten only by Tompkinsville, the top-rated Class A team in the state for most of the year, and Daviess County, a highly-regarded Class AA team." The story does not say whether the game is being played in Cadiz or at Rhea Stadium.

    1. Russellville's coach, by the way, is Clarence Baker. Before much longer, however, the Panthers are going to be winning state championships under Coach Ken Barrett.

    2. Russellville beat Trigg, 12-6, as Trigg's star halfback, Eddie Radford, was injured in the second quarter, having already totaled 119 yards rushing. The game was tied at 6 until a fourth-quarter touchdown pass by the home-standing Panthers.

  4. I remember Matthew saying one time that every band should have a song that is named after itself, and, indeed, Kool and the Gang does, and it's No. 95 this week, and I like it a lot.

    1. Matthew's totally right that every band should have a song named after itself. I particularly recommend "Bad Company," by Bad Company, and "Talk Talk," by Talk Talk.

    2. I remember when we talked about this there ensuing a predictably intense discussion about "The E Street Shuffle" should count for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

  5. OK, so the football contest ... the Kentucky New Era has been running this contest each week. Maybe they have been for years; I don't know--I didn't pay much attention to stuff like this until I got rich.

  6. You have to read through each of the little ads to see what game you have to pick. They do high-school, college and pro games.

  7. The Buck's Paint & Wallpaper game is Alabama and Clemson. I don't know who's at home in any of these games. It's remarkable that who's at home is so frequently not mentioned in this stuff. Well, anyway, I haven't seen anything about this Alabama-Clemson game, but I'm going with Clemson.

  8. Western-Eastern is the Dollar Bros. Shoes game, and that's appropriate because there's a Dollar Bros. Shoes on the square in Bowling Green. This game's at Eastern, and the Kentucky AP writer picked the Colonels, 14-12. But that's ridiculous. I'm picking the Tops.

  9. My Lord, that Dragnet was intense and terrifying.

  10. The McDonald's game is Michigan and Minnesota. I'm going with the Wolverines--and I love the idea of a hot apple pie after the game.

  11. It's Houston and Ole Miss in the Wade's Men's Store game, and this one is supposed to be a real high-scoring affair. Archie Manning is the Rebels' quarterback, and I'm going with Ole Miss.

  12. It's UK vs. Georgia in the Fish & Morin Jewelers game. The Wildcats lost to LSU last week, and they've been playing decent one week and not so great the next. I'm picking the Wildcats.

  13. Florida State and Mississippi State are in the Electric Plant Board game, and I'm guessing Florida State there.

  14. Christian County and Hoptown are not very good; Caldwell County and Murray are. Christian-Caldwell and Hoptown-Murray are Minit Markets and Hopkinsville Recapping games, respectively, and I'm going with Caldwell and Murray.

    1. Cecil Herndon in the Kentucky New Era:

A pair of critical pass interference calls, both of a somewhat questionable nature, helped Murray pin a 23-21 defeat on the Hoptown Tigers at Murray last night.

Both calls came when Murray was faced with fourth down and long yardage and allowed the host Tigers to retain possession of the football. ...

The second came very late in the game with Hoptown trailing by two points and desperately needing possession of the football.

Faced with fourth and 15, Murray again went to the pass. Hoptown apparently held. But the official farthest from the play, he was actually all the way across the field, dropped the flag. Two other officials right on top of the play signaled no infraction, but the call stood up.

Murray retained possession for another series of downs and although it didn't score, Hoptown had lost its last chance to win it.

It was indeed a bitter defeat for the luckless Tigers and prompted a disappointed Fleming Thornton to remark, "There just doesn't seem to be any justice."

  15. UK has lost to both Auburn and LSU, and Wildcats coach John Ray favors LSU in the Down's Drapery Shoppe game. Washington State has lost to both UCLA and Stanford, and WSU coach Jim Sweeney likes UCLA in the Campbell Office Equipment game. I'll go with both of the coaches' picks.

  16. The other high-school games are Fort Campbell and North Marshall in the West & Witherspoon game and Russellville vs. Trigg in the Daniel Boone Fried Chicken game. I'm going with Fort Campbell and Russellville.

  18. I pick Murray State over East Tennessee State in the Rudy's Texaco game and Middle Tennessee State over Austin Peay State in the Henderson-Moorefield Lumber game.

  19. My other college picks are South Carolina over Maryland in the Baldwin Truck & Tractor game, North Carolina State over Duke in the Grants game, Colorado over Missouri (upset special!) in the Montgomery Ward game, Michigan State over Iowa in the Myer's Mercury game, TCU over Miami (Florida) in the Clayton's Jewelers game, Southern California over Georgia Tech in the Big K game, Baylor over Texas A&M in the Joy's Jewelers game, Indiana over Wisconsin in the Major-Dray game and Vanderbilt over Florida in the Hancock Bros. Grocery game.

    1. I will say that in my years of watching Miami sports, I have come to believe that: (1) Miami really loves a winner; and (2) Miami gets skeptical at times. I'm not so sure that Miami never gives up. But on the whole, I think Mayor Clark has done a good job of capturing Miami's view of sports.

    5. Yeah, I'm with Andy Musser here. Dallas looks fantastic. The Cowboys look like they might finally break through this season. This new offensive backfield is really impressive and young. Craig Morton (in place of Don Meredith) is just 26; halfback Calvin Hill (in place of Craig Baynham) is 22, and fullback Walt Garrison (in place of Don Perkins) is 25.

  25. This weekend's games will mark the turn for the AFL, which started a week earlier this season than the NFL did. NFL teams are playing the sixth games of their 14-game schedules.

  26. The other games in the AFL this weekend are Chiefs-Bengals (Cincinnati won their first meeting this year), Raiders-Chargers (San Diego won first game between these two, but now it's missing receiver Gary Garrison), Broncos-Oilers (in Astrodome) and Jets-Patriots (Joe Namath and Don Maynard connected on two touchdown passes of more than 50 yards last week).

  27. The NFL games this weekend are Vikings-Lions (Minnesota has won four straight and allowed only seven touchdowns in five games; Lions go to young Greg Landry at quarterback with Bill Munson injured); Browns-Cardinals (Leroy Kelly and rookie Ron Johnson are powerful running tandem for Cleveland); Rams-Bears (they already switched from veteran Jack Concannon to young Bobby Douglass at quarterback, and the AP says there’s now talk of benching even Gale Sayers in Chicago); Eagles-Saints; Packers-Falcons; Redskins-Steelers (Vince Lombardi vs. Chuck Noll); Colts-49ers (John Brodie is having a "dead right elbow" examined, and Steve Spurrier is the new quarterback in San Francisco), and Cowboys-Giants (Monday-night showcase on CBS, not ABC, for NFL’s leading passer, Craig Morton, who took over for retired Don Meredith).

    1. Spurrier, the big Heisman Trophy winner, led the 49ers to a 24-21 win over Baltimore as John Brodie sat out with an injury. (Live it up, Spurrier--Don Shula and Bob Griese are about to take care of you.)

And the "furious, victory-starved bunch of Bears give the undefeated Rams a rude welcome to Wrigley Field." The Chicago-centric video linked there cuts off the final: 9-7, Los Angeles.
