Kentucky High-school Football, Week 2

I went to Bowling Green High School's football game at Saint Xavier High in Louisville on Sept. 4. There was a big crowd. Here's the line of cars waiting to turn in to the St. X parking lot from Poplar Level Road.

Eventually, they had me and the other cars around me park down at the bottom of a big hill, about a 10-minute walk away from the stadium. We went by some graves ...

And then we went by some baseball fields for the Germantown Little League ...

And then we climbed a trail through some trees ...

Finally, we made it to Brother Thomas More Page C.F.X. Stadium ...

I was still standing in line to purchase my ticket at kickoff, and I heard the crowd cheer as St. X returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Shortly after I got inside, the Tigers were threatening to score again ...

It's a handoff ...

Touchdown, St. X!

The Purples had beaten the Tigers four years in a row, but it was pretty much all St. X on this Friday ...

Bowling Green did close to within two scores and had the ball early in the fourth quarter ...

But then a storm started to kick up. St. X intercepted a tipped pass in the middle of a giant gust of wind. A lot of the people in the stands left at that point, and I probably should've, too. Instead, I stuck around all the way through the Tigers' 45-19 victory. Then I sat in traffic forever trying to get back out of the St. X parking lot.

By the time I did finally get on the road, I didn't want to be anywhere else near cars, so I took some crazy route back through southwestern Jefferson County. At one point, I drove by what appeared to be some sort of regional office for White Castle, which is based in Columbus, Ohio. (I lived in both Louisville and Columbus for a little while.)

Then I drove by some guys playing corn hole in front of a sports bar not too far from Iroquois Park ...

I got home very late, learned that McCracken County had swamped Madisonville-North Hopkins, checked the other Week 2 scores from around the state and went to bed. The end.
