College Baseball Update

We're just over halfway through the Super Regionals.  Here's where everything stands (home teams listed first):

Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia 5 - 3 Maryland
Virginia 5 - 4 Maryland

For the second year in a row, the Cavaliers knocked off Maryland in the Super Regionals to advance to the CWS.  UVA was disappointing for most of the year, and scraped into the NCAA Tournament as a number-3 seed. But they've played great in the tournament, and they pulled out back-to-back late comebacks to take out the Terps.

Fayetteville, Ark.

Arkansas 18 - 4 (8) Missouri St.
Arkansas 1 - 3 (8) Missouri St.

Today the Razorbacks and the Bears meet to see who's going to Omaha.

Gainesville, Fla.

(4) Florida 13 - 5 Florida St.
(4) Florida 11 - 4 Florida St.

As usual, FSU is unbeatable at home and quite vulnerable on the road.

Coral Gables, Fla.
(5) Miami (Fla.) 3 - 2 Virginia Commonwealth
(5) Miami (Fla.) 10 - 3 Virginia Commonwealth

Miami has reached the CWS without leaving home, and without playing any team except for Florida International, Columbia, and Virginia Commonwealth.  That's a pretty good deal.

Baton Rouge, La.
(2) Louisiana St. 4 - 3 La-Lafayette

This game was outstanding.  In front of a packed house in Baton Rouge, LSU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.  La-Lafayette scratched its way back into the game, which continued through a driving rainstorm in the 8th and 9th innings, and finally tied the score at 3 on a long home run in the top of the 9th.  Then LSU won it with a home run to almost the exact same part of the ballpark in the bottom of the 9th.  Great, great stuff.

Fort Worth, Tex.
(7) Texas Christian 13 - 4 Texas A & M

Louisville, Ky.
(3) Louisville 2 - 3 Cal-St. Fullerton (10 innings)

Champaign, Ill.
(6) Illinois 0 - 13 Vanderbilt

  1. Louisville came out and pounded Fullerton today, winning 9-3. The Cards and Titans will play for a trip to Omaha tomorrow.

    1. Go, Louisville.

Other than the Louisville, Champaign and Coral Gables brackets, these are some excellent rivalry pairings.

  3. In Fort Worth, Texas A & M pulled out a thriller, winning 2-1 in 10 innings. The Aggies and Horned Frogs will meet tomorrow to decide who goes to the CWS.

  6. Arkansas can't score in the top of the 9th. Still 3-2. Missouri State gets one more chance to tie the game.

  7. Missouri State's players are wearing the worst baseball jersey I have ever seen -- a hideous gray shirt with a gigantic Bear head outlined in light red and the word "BEARS" running across its top. Just awful.

Louisville today had big cursive L's on the back of their pants legs today. I've never seen that before, and I hope to never see it again.

  8. Arkansas, on the other hand, looks great -- cream-colored shirts and pants with the Arkansas "A" on the front, red belts, and the old-fashioned high red stirrups. That's one of the best college uniforms I've ever seen.

  9. Arkansas mows down Missouri State 1-2-3 in the 9th. They win 3-2, and they are going to the CWS. It will be their 8th trip all-time, and their fourth since 2004.

  10. OK, so the top bracket of the CWS is set. Here's who will be there, along with their final rankings in the Baseball America top 20:

(NR) Virginia: 4 trips to the CWS, second appearance in a row
    (20) Arkansas: 8 trips to the CWS, first since 2012
    (3) Florida: 9 trips to the CWS, first since 2012
    (12) Miami (Fla.): 24 trips to the CWS, first since 2008

    1. Florida fans will like their chances of getting to the finals from that bracket.

  12. No score between LSU and Lafayette, but Lafayette has men on first and second in the bottom of the fourth.

  13. LSU gets a double play to kill off the Ragin' Cajun threat in the fourth. After 4, the two in-state rivals are locked in a scoreless tie.

  14. LSU turns another double play to kill off a Ragin' Cajun threat in the 6th. Still no score with three innings to go.

  15. LSU has been one of the best-hitting teams in the country all year, and the LSU radio announcers are getting very frustrated with their lack of offense.

  16. But wait! Kade Scivicque, the Tigers' catcher and clean-up hitter, absolutely CRUSHES a home run off the big scoreboard in left field. The Tigers now lead 1-0, and they are nine outs from going to Omaha.

  17. Lafayette goes down 1-2-3 in the 7th, and LSU leads 1-0 after 7.

  18. LSU has blown this game open. They scored 4 runs in the top of the 8th, and they lead 5-1 with one inning left.

  19. LSU finishes off Lafayette, winning 6-3. The Tigers will be going to the CWS for the 17th team, and will be going for their seventh national championship. Their last CWS appearance was in 2013; their last title was in 2009.
