Album Review: Guitars and Microphones by Kate Pierson

I've talked on here before about the trend of this modern take on 50's and 60's girl group sound by female artists.  It's been going on now for almost ten years.  The whole sound came to the fore back in 2006 with the breakout success of Amy Winehouse.  It's certainly not as popular as it was at one point but hearing this album from Kate Pierson reminded me that there was a whole different take done on those same sounds by groups like the B-52s, The Go-Gos, etc. back in the 80's.

That's the best thing this album has going for it, is that it reminds you of what women like Pierson did with the whole punk and girl group sound back in the 80's.  For me that's about all this album has going for it.  The songs just aren't that interesting and sad to say Kate Pierson's voice, though still strong, sounds it's 66 years at times.

Following the Rhapsody rating method I give the album 1 out of 5 stars for Just OK.

    1. I believe that is what I was saying. Women like Pierson had a huge influence on music in the early 80's and in many ways were the blueprints for people like Amy Winehouse to follow. That doesn't mean this is a good album though.

  2. It's so fantastic that both the B-52s and R.E.M. came out of Athens, Ga.

    This song's fine.
