This Week's Games

Here are the final regular season standings in Western Kentucky, along with the first round of playoff games.  Congratulations to the McCracken County Mustangs, the Mayfield Cardinals, and the Caldwell County Tigers, each of which finished the season with a record of 9-1.  Good luck to everyone in the playoffs.

Class 1A, District 1
1.  Mayfield:  9-1, 3-0
2.  Russellville:  7-3, 2-1
3.  Fulton City:  1-8, 1-3
4.  Fulton Co:  1-8, 1-3

Please note that for each class we are only listing the playoff games that feature teams from District 1.  Home teams are always listed first.  In Class 1A, these playoffs are probably headed for the usual showdown between Mayfield and Louisville Holy Cross:

Mayfield (9-1) v. Caverna (4-6)
Bethlehem (6-4) v. Fulton City (1-8)
Russellville (7-3) v. Kentucky Country Day (6-4)
Lou. Holy Cross (7-3) v. Fulton Co. (1-8)

Class 2A, District 1:
1.  Caldwell Co:  9-1, 3-0
2.  Murray:  6-4, 2-1
3.  Ballard Mem:  8-2, 1-2
4.  Crittenden Co:  4-6, 0-3

If I could see any game this weekend, it would probably be the game between Murray and Union County.

Caldwell Co. (9-1) v. Hancock Co. (5-5)
Butler Co. (7-3) v. Ballard Mem. (8-2)
Murray (6-4) v. Union Co. (6-4)
Owensboro Catholic (9-1) v. Crittenden Co. (4-6)

Class 3A, District 1:
1.  Paducah Tilghman:  5-5, 3-0
2.  Trigg Co:  6-4, 2-1
3.  Fort Campbell:  3-7, 1-2
4.  Webster Co:  1-9, 0-3

Paducah Tilghman (5-5) v. Monroe Co. (2-7)
Adair Co. (8-2) v. Fort Campbell (3-7)
Trigg Co. (6-4) v. Edmonson Co. (4-6)
South Warren (10-0) v. Webster Co. (1-9)

Class 4A, District 1:
1.  Owensboro: 8-2, 3-0
2.  Madisonville-N. Hopkins:  8-2, 2-1
3.  Calloway Co:  3-7, 1-2
4.  Hopkins Co. Cent:  0-10, 0-3

Two nights ago, I was at a restaurant in DC and I got to talking to a guy wearing a UK hat.  It turned out that he was from Scottsville:

Owensboro (8-2) v. Breckinridge Co. (1-9)
Warren East (7-3) v. Calloway Co. (3-7)
Madisonville-N. Hopkins (8-2) v. Allen Co.-Scottsville (3-6)
Franklin-Simpson (8-1) v. Hopkins Co. Central (0-10)

Class 5A, District 1:1.  Graves Co:  7-3, 4-0
2.  Hopkinsville:  3-7, 3-1
3.  Christian Co:  3-7, 2-2
4.  Owensboro Apollo:  2-8, 1-3
Ohio Co:  0-10, 0-4

I will always think that Tilghman, Owensboro, and Bowling Green should be in the same class for football.  This would be a better tournament for basketball than football.

Graves Co. (7-3) v. Barren Co. (4-0)
Warren Cent. (6-4) v. Christian Co. (3-7)
Hopkinsville (3-7) v. Greenwood (4-6)
Bowling Green (9-1) v. Owensboro Apollo (2-8)

Class 6A, District 1:
1.  McCracken Co:  9-1, 3-0
2.  Henderson Co:  5-5, 2-1
3.  Daviess Co:  4-6, 1-2
4.  Marshall Co:  2-8, 0-3

I think all teams from Louisville, Lexington, and Northern Kentucky -- regardless of size -- should be placed in the same class.  No other teams should have to compete in that class unless they volunteer to do so.  But that's not how it works.  Instead, McCracken County has to beat Manual, then St. X, then Male, just to reach the semi-finals.

McCracken Co. (9-1) v. Lou. Manual (7-3)
Lou. St. Xavier (6-4) v. Daviess Co. (4-6)
Henderson Co. (5-5) v. Lou. Trinity (5-5)
Lou. Male (10-0) v. Marshall Co. (2-8)
