Kentucky High-school Football, Class 6A First-round Wrap

In the Class 6A playoffs, the Louisville Manual Crimsons got in early to western Paducah for their game with McCracken County.

While Manual and McCracken were still warming up at Marquette Stadium, the state's No. 1 team was already well on its way to victory back up in Louisville.

While our Mustangs mounted a 20-0 lead by half against visiting Manual, things around the state were going as probably most of us expected:

-- Louisville Saint Xavier beating Daviess County, 41-8;

-- Louisville Trinity winning at Henderson County, 55-7;

-- Male finishing off Marshall County, 62-2;

-- Elizabethtown Central Hardin beating Lexington Paul Laurence Dunbar, 47-16;

-- Lexington Bryan Station beating Muhlenberg County, 56-6;

-- Meade County stopping Lexington Henry Clay one yard from the end zone on the last play of the game for an 18-14 win;

-- Scott County, the defending state champ, beating Boone County, 53-21;

-- Louisville Butler beating Louisville Eastern, 26-17;

-- Louisville Fern Creek beating Louisville Seneca, 16-13;

-- Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park beating Oldham County, 42-7;

-- Louisville Ballard beating Louisville Southern, 42-14;

-- Edgewood Dixie Heights beating Lexington Tates Creek, 46-18;

-- Union Ryle beating Winchester George Rogers Clark, 28-14;

-- Independence Simon Kenton beating Richmond Madison Central, 40-11, and

-- Lexington Lafayette beating Campbell County, 35-21.

Meanwhile, back in Paducah, Manual rallied for 35 unanswered points to shock McCracken, 35-20. The giant play was snuffing a Mustangs fake-punt attempt at their 40 with a 20-14 lead early in the fourth quarter.

  1. Eric, I'm very sorry for you and for Coach Haskins. But to me, any season where you beat Tilghman and Mayfield is a great season.

  2. That's how I feel, too. When they were up, 20-0, at half, I started thinking, well, maybe McCracken really can challenge Male--given that Manual played Male to a touchdown a couple of weeks ago. But then the Crimsons just totally dominated the second half. I really hate it for Coach Haskins; I imagine he regrets the fake punt. But I'm afraid it wouldn't've mattered. This game seemed like one of those the-better-team-woke-up-at-halftime situations.
